maybe moving to Cheltenham

Hi there
There's a good chance I'll be moving from London to Cheltenham in the new year with my partner and our 13 month old son. DP job is just outside Bristol and I've taken redundancy whilst on Mat Leave, so we really need to be closer to his office.
Cheltenham seems like a lovely town and I'm sure it'll be a great place to raise our family but it's a huge move for me, away from all my friends and family so I guess I'm looking for some reassurance on whether there are many older mums (I'm 38) with young children, and what my chances are of making some non-Daily Mail reading friends
Thanks for any comments/advice.
Vicky

Hi Vicky. I live near to Chelts, and we're about to move to Chelts (to be in town). I'm mid-30s, loathe the DM (proud Grauniad reader), left London 5 years ago - we do exist, so don't fret too much.

Chelts is very middle-class and conservative, but in spite of this it still has a lot going for it .

ApuskiDusky · 16/10/2009 19:48

Just wanted to say hi as a 38 year old with a young dc; we moved here 5 years ago and have really liked it. Let us know when you're in the planning phase, we might be able to help with info.

randomv · 17/10/2009 13:17

Thanks for replying to my message and giving me some reassurance. Now we've agreed on a place to move to (huge relief) we just need to decide whether to sell up and buy in Cheltenham or rent out our flat and then rent there until we are 100% sure on which area we'd like to settle in. Either way, will probably be early next year so I'll be back in touch nearer the time!
Thanks again
Vicky

Moving to Cheltenham from London in March. Got two older DC's but trying for another one but if it doesn't go to plan it will be even harder for me to meet new people cause I can't turn up at mums and toddler groups. So would love to meet any bored housewives with nothing to do!

EvilTwins · 31/10/2009 17:56

I moved to Cheltenham from London 5 years ago. There is life after London... I love it here.

saltyseadog · 31/10/2009 22:25

We've just had an offer accepted on a place in Chelts (yay!), so we will be moving hopefully before Christmas.

Voulezvous - I'll be on mat leave from March onwards, so I'll be a housewife (although probably not a bored one with a newborn ). Happy to meet up

SazZaVoom · 31/10/2009 22:41

We moved from (just outside) London to (just outside) Cheltenham 5 years ago. Love it here now and less than 2hrs home to friends and family which is fab

There is a Gloucester meet thread with some folk from Cheltenham on it if you wanted to meet some local MNetters.

Enjoy your moves ladies

voulezvou · 31/10/2009 23:44

Hi

We're also moving to Cheltenham in October 2010. Our son will be 3 at Christmas and I will be working 3 days a week. Can anyone recommend any childcare options in the Charlton Kings area? Specifically - is it easy to get a pre-school/ nursery place and do you know of any good childminders who do the pick up from these?

We're also looking to rent in Charlton Kings initially so if you know of a house for rent in the area let me know,

Cheers

sheard · 27/07/2010 15:38

rentingis like gold dust we have found it hard as we are waiting to sell our house in lincolnshire before we can move!charlton kings is a nice area we ahve donealot of visits and investigations sure you will like it there xx

randomv · 05/08/2010 09:40

Well several months later and we have finally sold our property in London and can start really house-hunting!

From what I've seen so far, we'd like to move to Charlton Kings, Leckhampton or Hatherley..these are also best for my OH journey to work. But we're also looking at a few properties in the Pitville area - any thoughts in these areas? I'm not so concerned with secondary schools at this stage, but I do want to be in the catchement area for a decent primary school.

Now that we're actually sold I'm getting excited and it seems like a great place to raise a family!

Congrats on selling your place! I moved to 'Nam 15 years ago and have lived mainly in Tivoli and Leckhampton since. Tivoli is good for access to shops and town etc but is a bit wierd for primary schools as the cachement areas are so small. It should be St James' school which is lovely (DS1 is starting school this year and St James was one of our choices). You'll see others all saying Leckhampton is a good area too and I have to agree. We bought our place there because you can walk into town, there are great local amenities on the Bath Road and Leckhampton primary school is fab. Again the cahcement area was tiny this year, less the 0.5m radius so watch out! Good luck. Also, I HATE the DM and have found many likeminded people here.

randomv · 14/08/2010 14:23

Quiltingmama, that's good to know!!

Well I am pleased to report we've had an offer accepted on a place in Leckhampton..just round the corner from the primary school, which I'm delighted about. Really looking forward to moving now, and to getting to know the place. The Bath Road shops are probably a 10 min or so walk from our new house so easily accessible..maybe a drive or the bus into town though.

Once we're settled into the house I'll have to start looking into things to do with a toddler!

Good news on the house, randomv, glad to hear you are all sorted. Leckhampton village hall has a few things on - I took ds1 to baby signing classes there, and they have a toddler group on Tuesdays.

Quiltingmama · 15/08/2010 18:49

Good news on getting the house!

ladies, there is a cheltenham mn meet up on 6th nov for all of you who are moving here, and want to meet a few new people. Montpellier wine bar at 7.30pm.

DollyTwat · 06/10/2010 21:05

CHANGE OF DATE FOR MEET UP

I hadn't spotted it was bonfire night, so I think if we change it to the 13th November maybe more of us can make it.

Hopefully this isn't going to confuse too many people!

Looking forward to seeing you

Please can you email me to let me know if you're coming, then I'll put up a list of everyone just before.

Dolly xx

randomv · 25/10/2010 14:28
