i think that cuntas (i may not have spelled that one correctly) is my favourite so far. of course i don't know what it actually means though.

the lovely miss macintyre did suggest that we might get something out of looking at phonics earlier. i take it there are books you can buy?

weegiemum · 06/10/2009 21:35

I can't speak it AT ALL!

I can read it phonetically, I know quite a lot of the words as I have learned them with the kids, but I can't construct a sentence of my own. I am an expert in minority subjects (I know a great deal of gaidhlig (me too!) words about, for example, the Solar System or Recycling) but can't have a basic conversation!

Its at a lower level than any other language I speak - I'm pretty fluent in Spanish and good-ish in French - but I can't get to grips with it and that frustrates me a lot!

I understand more than I can say but the children can now talk about things and I don't always follow it - scarey!

AitchTwoToTangOh · 06/10/2009 21:38

oh shit, you're kidding? i'm relying on the fact that i have italian, spanish and french to drag me through it... this is why i want to get to grips with the grammar quickly. building blocks of a language and all that.

weegiemum · 06/10/2009 21:40

Co leis a tha thu macmum?

(sorry can't put an ad on the letters, dunno how!!) (and OK if you don't want to say!)

weegiemum · 06/10/2009 21:43

Aitch I have the phonics stuff from school. If you want to meet for coffee sometime (I know we mentioned it before!) I can let you have some of it.

There's a wee cartoon type book "Gaelic is Fun" whcih is quite good for vocab and grammar in a lighthearted kind of way. I spend most days immersed in the dictionary looking up words like "composting" in gaidhlig (ds is doing a "recycling" topic this term!)

kirmcc · 06/10/2009 21:43

aitch if u want. i could give you a copy of the work we got at the p1's homework help class last year for you to photocopy, if you think it would help you

AitchTwoToTangOh · 06/10/2009 21:46

mwah and mwah, that would be great, both of you. i will of course be at the school at 12.45 tomorrow, if that's of interest... we could coffee up at the mitchell or across the road? anyone up for that or is it short notice?

kirmcc · 06/10/2009 21:46

should we start another thread instead of hi-jacking this one?

macmam · 06/10/2009 21:47

Conjugate a few verbs, eh Aitch? You need a grammarac for that! What about watching Alba 168 or Radio nan Gaidheal 104.7....lessons often on and just immersing yourself to get a "feel" for the language and some of the dialects....

weegiemum · 06/10/2009 21:51

its just a wee bit early for me, I will be around there from about 1.30 - 2 though, as I am working in the morning and its not worth going home from Partick to come back over for 3 to pick up littlies whilst bigger goes to accordion.

So am about 2-3.40, with quick dash to school at 3 to pick up ds and dd2.

Could we manage something?

If not after the hols.

Will go start a new Gaelic Meet Ups thread!

macmam · 06/10/2009 21:51

Everytime I get back this thread seems to double!

AitchTwoToTangOh · 06/10/2009 21:52

yes, we should. i'm going to call it 'miss macman's gaidhlig class, pay attention or you will be oot the door'. will post now. (and will moan about the fact that i don't get bbc alba on the telly).

weegiemum · 06/10/2009 21:54

Aitch you can watch it on iplayer!

My children love De-a-nis, (and I feel 103 cos I used to teach one of the presenters!)

macmam · 06/10/2009 22:14

I'm off to stir the porridge in readiness for tomorrow and get the peats in!

Oidhche math!

AitchTwoToTangOh · 06/10/2009 22:15

well, yes, but the thing is that i WON'T watch it on iplayer... i want it burbling away on the telly in the same way that r4 burbles. if i go on iplayer there will be other things to watch. (do you knwo what i do for a living? i can't watch any more tv on purpose, my head will explode). and i'd like it on the flippin' telly, tbh. have just googled and apparently they're pushing for it on freeview although technically it's not slated for there for two years.

miss macmam, are you going to be our dominie on the other thread?

AitchTwoToTangOh · 06/10/2009 22:16

lol.

weegiemum · 06/10/2009 22:19

You can get gaelic telly on freeview but only for an hour a day. When I can be arsed getting up have a chance I will check channel for you!

AitchTwoToTangOh · 06/10/2009 22:25

cheers, yes, i get that. we're trying to record speaking our language on it, but i notice that the stupid maching has not been complying.

AitchTwoToTangOh · 06/10/2009 23:00

fao macmam
