Moving to Woking advice please

Hi all
We have decided to move from Redhill to Woking. Reason for move is better rail connections for my husband into London and closer to friends.
We are looking to rent a property no more than 1 mile from the Woking station. This is so my husband can walk to and from the train (hope to get rid of second car) and I can walk into town to look around the shops. We visited Woking for the first time on Sunday to have a look at the town centre. It is very much like Redhill - shops ok, pedestrian friendly for children to walk around. Have read other forums (some a few years old) and they make to town centre sound a bit miserable. Is it really like this? We will make a couple more visits (during the week), to get a petty feel for the place, before we move.

I have 2 DD (2yrs 10mths and 15mths) and baby #3 due December 31st. I would need to find a pre-school for eldest DD - can anyone recommend any? Extremely pleased with the one she is in at present (Kiwi's Meadvale), so feeling a bit sad she will need to leave. Also want to take younger DD to toddler group - recommendations?
Also what other sorts of activities are there to do with youngsters.

Hippi - well done you on your weight loss.

Miss - Agree re Horsell. I am on the South side - about 5 mins walk to the park. Hence my frequency there!

misscreosote · 31/07/2009 13:57

Hippi - 4 stone . Nice one!

hF - I am also frequently found feeding ducks, but on Goldsworth park lake. Wherever you are, the kids want to do the same thing....

hippipotamiHasLost53lbs · 31/07/2009 14:01

Oooh, thank you all Long way to go yet though...

misscreosote · 31/07/2009 14:09

Maybe so, but not as far as it might have been 4 stone ago!! I lost something like 3 stone many moons ago, and remember how hard it was. Wine, cake and pregnancies have intervened since then though (not all at the same time!!)

AnnieLobeseder · 31/07/2009 14:42

Ah, I had forgotten about Horsell. It is indeed lovely, but far too expensive for mere mortals like me!

hippipotamiHasLost53lbs · 31/07/2009 14:48

Same here Annie - Knaphill was as far as we got.

And actually, Knaphill is lovely. It has had some bad press over the last few years due to 'teenage gangs'. Well these gangs were purely youngsters with nothing to do - NOT the criminal thugs some old biddies people made them out to be.
Anyroad, local councillors and the residents association got together and set up a youthclub at the community centre and organised activites and band competitions such as 'rock on the hill' etc and the problem has virtually completely cleared up. And apparently the teens absolutely love how much there now is to do in the village

hf128219 · 31/07/2009 14:53

How old are we all? I am 39.

hippipotamiHasLost53lbs · 31/07/2009 14:54

I am 37. (but seem to have the oldest children)

AnnieLobeseder · 31/07/2009 17:54

35 - woo hoo, I'm the baby!

nzmummyinblighty · 31/07/2009 18:43

Have been looking at our street map of the Woking area and Horsell is in 1 mile of the Woking station. The only reason i have said close to town is so i have something to fill my time. Sounds like there are lots of lovely ladies living in the area so maybe our time could be filled with play-dates, coffee/lunch out and park visits. Hope so as i have not really met many people where i am and get rather lonely at times
My DDs are 2yrs10mths (3 end of september) and 15mths and baby#3 is due December 31st.
Other thing i was wanting some info on was the local maternity services and people's experiences in the maternity wards
Thanks ladies
xx

nz (and the others) we will most definately meet up
Can't really help you on maternity issues though, it has been tooooo long for me!

hf128219 · 31/07/2009 18:58

Looks like I am the oldest with one of the youngest!

hf128219 · 31/07/2009 19:11

I had my dd at Northwick Park in London as we lived there at the time. I know other mums had theirs at St Peters in Chertsey (near Woking) and had no complaints.

misscreosote · 31/07/2009 19:26

I'm 34, was thinking my 8 week old was the youngest, but nzmummy you have a minus five month old which wins!

I had my two at st peters and 'fraid my experiences weren't too good, found them quite knife happy. The NICU unit is fabulous though. Frimley Park seem a bit less interventionist, from the stories I've heard. Its all a bit luck of the draw really, whereever you go, I guess.

Nzmummy - whichever area you choose, there are so many families in woking, and so many toddler groups that you'll have no problems meeting people I'm sure (and hopefully there will be a mumsnet woking meet up as well!). You might also find it worthwhile doing a 'refresher' antenatal course with the nct, to meet a group of second/third time mums in the area due around the same time as you (if you have time with 2 to look after already.... ).

nzmummyinblighty · 31/07/2009 19:29

I have looked on the NCT site for refresher courses as thought this would be a great way to meet people. But you can't take kids along and most of the classes are in the middle of the day

They do run evening courses as well, if you have the energy for them! Mostly on demand I think, so might not be on the website.

AnnieLobeseder · 31/07/2009 19:41

I had DD1 at St Peter's and it was so awful I had DD2 at home, but was booked into Frimley Park if I'd needed to go it.

Yup, nz, loads of friends and you haven't even moved yet!

So excited to finally find local MNers. I posted looking for some a while back but didn't get a single response!

hf128219 · 31/07/2009 19:43

Sorry I gave a thumbs up for St Peters!!

nzmummyinblighty · 31/07/2009 20:06

misscreosote - thanks for that. Will have to contact them.

I had been thinking St Peter's as it was rather close

Hi nzmummy
I have lived around and about Woking for most of my life. I have a husband who commutes to Reading and London and he was insistent on living within walking distance of the town centre. We bought a house on Barnsbury which is on the South side of Woking. Is ex-council but never had any troubles, has a good primary school & is only 5 mins bus ride to town/station or 20 min walk. Park and leisure centre are 15 min walk. If I had my choice again I would perhaps prefer Knaphill or Horsell, but Knaphill is too far away for hubby and Horsell is out of our price range! From whatyou say Horsell would be a good compromise. Horsell common is a fab place for little ones to explore & there are good pre, junior & senior schools.
Woking town centre has really grown and there are great shops and plenty of coffee shops! I rarely need to shop elsewhere. The surrounding areas are also lovely. I have national trust membership and there are five good houses/gardens that are within 30 min drive. Highly recommend Wisley Garden. 15 min drive away and has lots of great things for kids to do. They also do an annual membership which is a good money saver.
The library is a good place to pick up guides to the area. The family grapevine is excellent. It lists loads of things to do and places to go
Hope you have fun exploring Woking

tracyface · 13/08/2009 11:16

Hi nzmummy

I too have lived around Woking for all of my life and we like it here.I have children aged 19, 17 10, 2 1\2 and 1 1\2 and there seems to be lots to keep all ages amused in the area.

SGMAJORMUM I am also opposite Barnsbury near to the shop on the green and I agree we have not had any trouble either. Unless you count noisy drunk teenagers who congregate in the bus stop at night, but I guess you get that everywhere on a weekend.

I too really like Horsell as it is close to the town but has a more village atmosphere which is nice.

There are loads of toddler groups about and if you look up the woking sure start centre they are always arranging play and learn sessions for carers and children and best of all they are free! We manage to go to a different place nearly every day of the week if we are organised enough.

I recommend Magic Moments preschool in Westfield as my little girl is starting in September and it looks lovely.

Any way enough rambling from me

As there seems to be a few of us we must arrange a Woking Mumsnet meet if you are interested that would be great!

on the town centre bit, Woking's town centre is quite compact and has little character in that all the shops are chain stores. OTOH, there are quite a lot of shops, and lots of people spend their time taking kids in pushchairs from Starbucks to Debenhams via H&M and Next or whatever.

The dining situation is pretty poor, there are some fast food places, a few Indian restaurants, some low-end Italian restaurants, and a few Chinese takeaways.

Guildford has better on this front (more places to go, tend to be slightly more sophisticated), much more in the way of independent shops, boutiques.

I guess WOking and Redhill probably have a bit in common in that they are the less poncey parts of Surrey.

Also in Guildford the chavvy pubs (Wetherspoons etc.) are concentrated by the train station, whereas in Woking the nighttime entertainment is basically Wetherspooons + Yates, which is I think what leads people to suggest that it's miserable.

It's not at all, pretty much anywhere in Greater London would have worse behaviour, but the fact that Yates et al are so central makes them rather dominate the town of an evening.

Guildford is considered considerably more desirable, hence higher rents, but in Guildford there is more traffic to fight through if you want to go somewhere, and the town centre is on a steep hill, which is perhaps not the best with baby in pushchair.
