Buying a Christiana bike

millwood · 20/05/2009 09:57

We are buying a Christiana bike (www.christianiabikes.com/) for our family. This is one of the front loading cargo bikes so children are in front rather than pulled behind in a trailer.

The supplier in the UK will give us a 5% discount if 3 or more are ordered. We already have another family who want to buy one - is anyone interested in joining our consortium?!

How much would it cost?

LaCerbiatta · 26/05/2009 12:19

Doesn't look very confortable... Is it covered? I was interested in one of these: these

Sorry - been away. They are expensive starting at roughly 1700 Euros depending on what extras you want. However, they are really robust and you can even carry an adult.

There are a few different bikes along the same lines on the market and all are roughly the same price. This is the orginal and the others are essentially different versions. You should really try them out to find your preferred one. We tried the Kangaroo tugamommy and I found it impossible to steer. It also doesn't keep its resale value in the same way as the Christiana.

The Christiana has a hood which essentially works the same as the Kangaroo's - and it is comfy. We've pretty much tried them all and decided on the Christiana as we either preferred the way it rode or it was more robust than the others.

Hope you can be persuaded!

Gosh that's rather too much for me at the moment! Sorry - hope you can find someone to share!

Hi - did anyone buy one in the end. We are seriously considerring buying one but can't face going to London to try it. Would like to hear from real users of a christiana.

Overmydeadbody · 26/08/2009 22:55

How come, in that kangaroo picture, the woman isn' wearing a helmet but the kids are?

jumpjockey · 06/09/2009 10:55

Coming to this one a bit late but have you been to the 'school run shop' on Mill Road, the guy there has lots of different family bikes/trikes etc to try

www.dutchbike.co.uk/newcentre.htm

though when we went in he wasn't especially keen on the Christiana, apparently they're pretty harsh on your back as the steering is very wide and you have to turn your whole body rather than just your arms. And they're supposedly a bit more unstable than the bakfiets. Not sure why he sells them tbh if he's not keen! We've ordered a 'motherbike' with front seat from him, just waiting for it to come in

millwood · 21/09/2009 12:08

We bought one and love it. The guy at Dutchbikes is just the supplier for the company in London so he obviously prefers the Bakfiets which is the one he imports. He's also a very persuasive salesman!

I would recommend trying them all - there are basically four (Christiana, Nihola, Kangaroo and Bakfiets) as we were surprised that we ended up liking the Christiana best.

Let me know if you want more info as we did a lot of research but definitely the way to go. We have hardly used the car at all since getting it

I would agree with Millwood, trying all these bikes is really key. Both you and the children will prefer one rather than another.

We tried a lot and ended up purchasing the Bellabike from Copenhagen. We found the rear wheel steering really easy to manoeuvre the bike and I got to design the box to match our family personality. In my case a yellow New York taxi design.

We loved it so much that we now import them and they are now available in the UK through www.kidsandfamilycycles.co.uk

I use the Bellabike regularly to do the school run with my 4 boys, so more than happy to share my experiences to date.
