Hiya, as I've said, me and my little family are moving to Newcastle sometime between now and September (basically as soon as we can get someone to take over the lease on our house) and I was wondering which areas people would recommend to live in. We'll be renting and have a budget of around £600 pcm, we need to be near the metro as I'll be going to one of the unis, and it can't be too rough as we have a 2 year old, plus I'm a wimp!

I'd say if you want to live in Newcastle to choose areas such as Gosforth, Jesmond and Kingston Park. The areas which are a cause for concern in Newcastle are mainly Fenham and Benwell.

Hello All,
we are planning to move to Newcastle from Buckinghamshire in August for work reasons. my work is in Prudhoe town , I have to decide my choice between Prudhoe and Newcastle.

I would like to seek some advise on choosing good areas to settle with family on rented house.

I saw this thread some of them were posted few years ago and some recently. So I thought I can post the question now to get the latest good areas and bad areas around Newcastle.

I am looking forward for my child reception year and the deadlines are over.
My main focus is to get good school for my child ( reception year).
I heard late admissions won't be a problem in Newcastle when compared to south of England.

Please advise me about the areas.

Thanks

My sister lives in prudhoe it's a lovely friendly place.

KarthiHYC · 02/06/2016 23:12

Thanks, i will do search more about Prudhoe town. If schools are good then I can drive to Newcastle to shop at supermarkets like Tesco,Asda, Lidl etc.

We used to live in Jesmond and had a house but reckon you could rent an Upper Tyneside Flat (maisonette) with own door for around that.
We are quite fussy and these are the places we would live with kids...

Jesmond (West Jesmond a bit cheaper)
Gosforth
Fenham (Moorside)
Spital Tongue
Sandford
Also talk to the Uni as think they have family accommodation to rent.
Ponteland is also very nice and on the metro (airport) but a way out.

KarthiHYC · 09/06/2016 22:06

Thanks Belshels for your list of areas. i will try to find a flat there and it looks properties are going away quickly especially in South Gosforth,Long benton, Jesmond area.

If I don't get any properties in the above mentioned areas, Shall I consider other areas like Blaydon,Gatesahead, wallsend.

~~How is Wallsend and Gatesahead areas? Are they ok for Primary schools?

I live at the coast but have friends and family all over. What kind of area do you want to live in and what's your budget like? Prudhoe is friendly and lots of nice countryside around, the town itself is functional rather than trendy. There are some lovely villages around Prudhoe, and if you go in the other direction (away from Newcastle) Hexham is a great market town with some excellent schools, plus leisure centre, waitrose, tesco and Aldi and train station. Voted one of the best places to live fairly recently. Jesmond and Gosforth pretty smart and also relatively ££, plus bear in mind you would be commuting from one side of the city to the other every day. It isn't central London-busy but I would find it a bit tiring after a while.

I used to live in Prudhoe and loved it - it has the high street, which whilst not glamorous has a variety of shops and cafes there. It has its own castle, National trust place Cherryburn is down the road, a brand new library and swimming pool with fab kids section. The schools from what I remember are good and not over subscribed, and rents are reasonable depending on what you are after.

Nearby areas that are also possibles are Wylam (more rural) Blaydon (closer to Newcastle) Corbridge (aout 15 mins away, much more expensive but LOVELY!) Hexham is prob your nearest Town to West and as mentioned above was voted one of the nicest places to live. I would prob steer clear of Gosforth / Jesmond area as you are the opposite end of the city and your commute would be harder.

Any questions or if you want to give an idea of budget I am happy to help house hunt (ex estate agent!)

Welcome to the area :)

Heaton might be nice Lissy, It is full of character and has shops, buses, metro, schools a park. I am not sure if you can rent there for the amount you have but it would be worth looking.
Gluestick you do not say what your budget is but Gosforth, Jesmond or Heaton are very nice.

Hi

We were also looking to relocate to Newcastle about 3 years ago and looked at all the places mentioned but ended up in High Heaton. It is great here, we are really happy with our choice. It's mainly 3 bed semi's built in the 30s and 50s. The 30s built houses tend to be slightly larger. It is more family orientated/ young professionals than Heaton.

I like you was also keen to be near a metro station until I realised that the local bus here (no 38) goes into the centre of town every 10 mins which has been great. The primary schools are rated Outstanding, it's walking distance to the freeman hospital, the Ministry, paddy freemans park/ jesmond dene (which is well work a visit) and you will pay far less than jesmond or gosforth. There are local shops - deli/ cafe, florist, newsagents, garage, takeaways... and even a large sainsburys nearby.

I would definitely recommend having a look round here. Hope this helps.

Go for Whitley Bay! It's up and coming and on the seaside.... winner!

Lunigiana · 05/11/2018 18:23

Hello. Can anyone please tell me about coxlodge as an area as wanting to move back to gosforth but financially can't afford. Good transport links are essential. Also can I easily walk to gosforth from there ?? Thank you so much

Do you know what Leazes is like at all? Thanks.

Leon2312 · 24/01/2019 00:18

Moving to Newcastle for work. Can anyone give me a description of Leazes area please? Opposite the large park? How safe is Newcastle compared to London? Oh and what is the weather like through winter as its pretty mild in London. Won’t have any friends up there so is it quite easy or not to meet people and make friends? Many thanks all.
