Hi, I'm asking on behalf of a friend and would be grateful if you could let me know which secondary schools within the area, both state & private, are good?
TIA

State - Weydon in Farnham - but hard to get into unless you live within the catchment.

Rodborough in Witley is ok.

Private Schools - depends what you're looking for really, and whether for boys or girls.

Girls - Academically selective schools - Guildford High School for Girls, Tormead (both in Guildford), and St Catherine's in Bramley, all have very good reputations and are popular.

Can recommend The Royal School in Haslemere - not selective but does have some very bright girls and a great ethos/feel to it. It is high on Value Add and Points per pupil. Priors Field in Godalming also nice.

Boys - Royal Grammar School, Guildford (for the academic).

Coed - King Edwards in Witley or Frensham Heights in Frensham (good at drama/music/arts, with good academic results.

Charterhouse - if you want a boys' boarding school. (expensive!)

Prior's Field School in Godalming is an independent girls' school. I work there (PA to the Head) so you may consider me biased but I would have no hesitation in sending Freya there...

Know this is an old thread but for anyone looking now-
My sisters daughter is at Priors field and they love it. She is not GHS academic standards- more tormead but didn't like the tormead atmosphere.
Priors field does a lot for the girls in terms of listening to what they want and it is traditional but also very with the times. It is boarding and day, most girls are day in year 7 and this increases as they go up the school but my sisters girls dont want to board ever and would definately not be a problem, lots dont.
The school has lots of opputunities because it is smaller- 3 forms in most years and small classes, girls get lots of help and individual attention. Pastoral care is outstanding and each girl is really known. Results varied- some get 10A*s at the top of the range some much less but the school definately improves and adds value. A few years ago it got a new head who has really turned it around. They do lots with Charterhouse boys in terms of social events.
My niece feels she really belongs there and is part of the community. It is a mix of parents- some mega rich, some just average but it is much more 'new money' rather than St Catherines which her other daughter was at which was more inherited money and rich families who's mothers were old girls etc. St Catherines is much more out of touch with the girls. I looked round for my daughter and thought it wasn't as well kept and the grounds were big but shabby in comparison to Priors field/Guildford high. St Catherines girls seemed quite bitchy and didnt think my daughter would fit in because 'daddy' wouldnt be paying etc!! Does get good results though! Priors field is a lovely school and really happy friendly atmoshere and fantastic grounds.

This is a little silly, not everyone's "daddy" pays at St Cats. As the daughter of a factory worker, I am very proud to have worked hard enough to put my daughter through this school.

Happymum22 · 08/10/2010 15:57

sorry sherrydog you are quite right and i am wrong especially as a single mum, who like you has worked my socks off to put my daugters through GHS, to make assumptions about 'daddies' paying and rich girls at st cats.
please accept my apologies about that comment, i can understand how frustrating it is when people have their ideas and judgements on reasons of private schooling. you shoulld be very proud.
st cats has many positives i did not mention as i dont know the school well enoguh, i just mentioned my opinion from what i know of it.

Hi, I know I'm now adding to a really old thread but do you think living in Godalming but going to school in guildford - like suggested GHS - is too far out both for school run(s) and for children being away from potential friends? I am thinking in the younger years now as my daughter is due to start next Sept. Opinions welcome!

WineFlu · 05/11/2010 22:06

Any thoughts on Godalming living and school in Guildford??? Or East Horsley living?

Happymum22 · 27/11/2010 13:14

@wineflu

i know a huge number who are at my daughter's school (GHS) and live godalming (which in comparison to other places peopple travel from is actually near) others come from cobham, esher, haslemere, farnham, camberley, claygate, east horsley, dorking surbiton, hindhead, woking, churt and thursley. So no godalming is certainly not too far!
This is mainly true for the seniors but when my daughters were in the juniors we lived down near Churt and haslemere and then in GOdalming and we certainly wernt a long ay from guildford or friends. Godalming is only 10-15 minutes from suildford and when your daughter is older she can get the train, as most girls do, right to London road which is next door to GHS and down the road from Tormead.
