Bit of a drive but not too far is Hendon RAF museum. It's free, lots planes to look at and interactive area. Also indoors. Gardens at Knebworth fun for kids (dinosaur trail), Willow farm nr London Colney expensive but kids love it. Sorry not exactly harpenden.

play in the snow if it lasts?

I'm in Harpenden, have a 5.5. yr old, if you want to meet up. Otherwise there's Big Space soft play, Jungle Jim's ditto, two nice museums with stuff on in St Albans (roman one and town one). Ds likes simply getting on a train so you could get yourself down to the station and take your pick of destinations!

Stockwood Park in Luton (Harpenden side) has a nice museum with stuff on for kids and massive grounds with stables so they can go and watch the horses.

And there's a petting farm at Slip End, between Harpenden and Luton.

Aldenham Country Park - has a small farm, a lake and a (pretend) Hundred Acre Wood.

The museums in St Albans usually have activities on - the one on Hatfield Rd has morning ones where you can leave the children!

Thanks very much for all those helpful suggestions. We'll definitely be hitting the local attractions!

Are there any more places I can leave them for a few hours, or better yet all day, on one of those February halfterm days? Camps, that sort of thing. I have to do some work, especially after having this week destroyed by the school closure snow.

I don't think much of February halfterms myself, we can't afford to go skiing, a week is too short for me to endure longhaul travel, and dh can't even take time off work this year so we can't even go anywhere for a long (cold wet) weekend. My friends in other parts of the UK get an extra week at a better time of year.

There are a few holiday clubs around - Lindees in St Albans, this one

Replay which I think is based in Sandridge hall

I'm sure there are some in Harpenden itself - they should all be registered so maybe take a look on the council website? I'm sure some of the private gyms run them too.

Koolkidz are wonderful - really fun camps.

GeneralAngst · 09/02/2009 08:34

verygreenlawn, what has been your experience with koolkidz pls?

I've had them do a birthday party and also a holiday camp - they were great, really nice people, active camps. They do the camps at a school in St Albans. I'm planning to book 2 of the dcs in the summer camp for a few days here and there, but they get a lot of repeat bookings so you've just reminded me to put something on the calendar so I don't forget!

Thanks very much, they seem very nice and I've found a phone number for Replay too. I think I've got the halfterm under control.
