Parking for Nanny in a zoned area - how?

Just posting this to see if anyone else had been in this position and had a good solution for me...

I am due to go back to work in April, and we've realized that a nanny is the best option for looking after our two DDs. It will eat up ALL my salary and leave us a bit tight for cash, but needs must. I want to return to work as if I leave my profession now there is zero chance I will ever get back into it.

We've found a great lady to do the job but, like all of the candidates in fact, she doesn't live in Edinburgh. We live in a flat in Zone 8 so have no private parking space. She needs to drive to work, as the journey by public transport would take her two hours. There seems to be no provision for us getting a permit for her AT ALL. Spoke to the parking dept. today and they were very unhelpful.

I think this is pretty crazy - we cannot afford to pay the £30pw+ for a private space in the area. She is not eligible for a business or tradesman's permit. What are we supposed to do?

what about park and ride?

do you have a car?

HLaurens · 26/01/2009 15:01

I looked into park and ride, but she lives in East Lothian - so I guess Newcraighall is the obvious one. But she would then have to get a bus from the station once in Edinburgh. I wouldn't fancy this journey if I had to start work at 7.45am.

We do have a car - my current strategy is that we insure the car for her and I catch the train to work instead. But what do we do Monday am and Thurs pm as we use our car at the w/e.

if she lives in east lothian can she get the train?

sorry, i dont know where zone 8 is

a lot of commuters park in free streets in the town and get the bus instead of the park andride

could she park on a bus route suitalbe for buses to your street?

any other job you have to sort out parking and travel arrangements your self. its commendable that you are trying to do this for her

HLaurens · 26/01/2009 15:18

Zone 8 is Bruntsfield and Marchmont. I suppose she could park in Shandon and get the no10 or 27 bus. Since they added the extra zones S1-3 etc. free parking is really a long way from us.

She is a really lovely lady and I really want her to look after my kids. DD1 is currently with a fantastic childminder, so we've had quite a time finding someone who lives up to her standards, but she fits the bill!

Oh, and the village she lives in is quite a drive from the station.

if i were your nanny i would park somewhere like liberton adn get the bus

is there a possiblilty of shared permits? sorry not sure how it works

HLaurens · 26/01/2009 15:28

No shared permits unfortunately - the permit is specific to the vehicle and has the registration number on it.

could she live in over the days she will be working for you?

i still think if i were her i would park somewhere like cameron toll and get the bus

not much fun on a dark and wet january morning though but we all have to do it unfortunately

you could assist by buying her a bus pass maybe? they are £42 a month now

nailpolish · 26/01/2009 15:31

hhow far down morningside does the parking permit go?

sorry have to go on school run now - goo d luck! and i hope it works out for you and your new nanny
