Which are good ones for a 4 year old and a 2 year old? Not worried about the 4 year old so much as he is interested in most things and I think would quite enjoy a trip to any of them. What I want to avoid is disgruntled looks from staff/other people visiting as the 2 year old charges about poking priceless exhibits shouting "daddy" randomly.

So - culture me. Where do I take them?!

Oh, Growlygus, I share your pain...I 'did' Kettle's Yard in 17 minutes and 42 seconds last year as Hurricane DS2 (2) ran full tilt towards every tempting sparkly art piece and squashy, elderly bit of furniture. The ladies there were rather sweet with DS1 (6), sending him off on missions to find various things hidden in paintings, but I can't recommend the house for toddlers.

On the other hand, the gallery there has a area which is normally set aside for interactive drawing/construction, so if there is an interesting show on there it's worth a go.

The Fitz is a bit mixed: some areas are fine (particularly the cafe and shop part with its excellent glass elevator) but some galleries have - gah! - porcelain on open display. I still wake, sweating, from the memory of DS1 pounding on the glass of one of the display cases for the antiquities.

Best of all is the zoology museum - quite bomb proof, although it has bizarre opening hours - you can't beat a giant whale skeleton in my book. I've also heard arch and anth is similarly worth a visit, but it's opening hours are even more odd.
