London Road, Brighton, Tesco Development

If you're interested in signing a petition against the plans to redevelop the London Road area around a massive new Tesco development, it's available online here.

www.ipetitions.com/petition/anotherlondonroad

The 'Another London Road' group is organised by members of the local community who believe that another future is possible for London Road, one that's shaped from within the community, and serving its needs rather than those of big business and distant share holders.

They are presenting the petition to the council meeting on the 4th December.

There's also a Facebook group here:

better than an empty shop imo

dilbertina · 26/11/2008 12:44

It's not an empty shop at the moment though is it? If I've got the right place, isn't that a stone's throw from the new Sainsburys?

dilbertina · 26/11/2008 12:58

Out of interest though. Tesco's have recently been refused an alcohol licence for a proposed Tesco express in St James St. Brighton.

All refurb work has stopped at the moment, don't know if that means they're not going to bother at all.

Monkey2046 · 28/11/2008 14:00

Thanks for posting the petition link here. Tesco's plans for London Road involve knocking down a whole block at the Northern end, from Vantage Point all the way down to Richer Sounds- so all those houses, shops and businesses will be bulldozed to make way for a mammoth Tesco store and car park.

Dubh · 03/12/2008 17:01

I just think it's a terrible shame that a town as creative as brighton can't come up with a more innovative redevelopment plan!

(Not to mention the incredible stupidity of sticking a massive supermarket they're clearly expecting people to drive to, with a 1000 space car park, in one of the most congested and polluted areas of the city.)

But then I hate all the large supermarket companies with a vengeance

If they're worried about London Road becoming a food desert and therefore in dire need of help from Tesco, can I propose we create a massive food market with low priced stalls for local farmers, producers and allotment owners. And anyone who makes chocolate. They get free stalls.

Noooo...we don't need another supermarket around here. Now where's that petition!

2AdventSevenfoldShoes · 05/12/2008 12:35

I didn't realise it was going to be that big

2AdventSevenfoldShoes · 05/12/2008 12:40

have joined fb group and signed petition,
I thought it was where the old saisburys was
surely we would loose some good shops like maplans(sp)

munkeebiznessunderthemistletoe · 08/12/2008 12:31

I too have added my name to the petition, and think it's short sighted plan and quite outrageous on many levels. But I don't hold out much hope- BandH consultations just seem to be about making themselves look good rather than actually listening to the views of residents. I always respond to consultations diligently and never seem to have my views listened to, or even acknowledged.

Spidermama · 08/12/2008 12:45

Funny because when I interviewed the planners about this a few months ago they denied there were any plans for a big Tesco.

The last thing London Road needs is a massive Tesco. I will sign the petition and join the FB group. Thanks Dubh.

Spidermama · 08/12/2008 12:55

There's already a large Sainsburys there.

While we're at it, are you all following the developments at Starbucks in Kemptown?

Basically Starbucks went ahead and started trading there without planning permission. Every Saturday for the past six months protesters have held a demo outside the shop.
I believe the council has just served an eviction order, though they'll probably appeal.

Here's the FB group for anyone interested.

Dubh · 08/12/2008 14:31

The Starbucks thing was outrageous! The sheer arrogance. Thanks for the link to the FB group.

I just think it's so important in this economic climate to channel as much money as I can afford to good quality small businesses or we'll be left with no choice at all once this has run its course.

Absolutely agree Dubh. It's so disrespectful of SB just to move in like that- no consideration for community or even local law. And it looks like Tesco are trying to do the same in London Road. It makes my blood boil. I hvae signed and joined everything!

My house has a lot of small businesses surrounding it and they are all finding it a bit tough this year so I agree- shop small, shop local! We should start a campaign!!!
