Good primary schools in St Albans??!!

Hey, I am hoping for some advice!!

We are relocating to St Albans from NW London as our local schools are dire (and the cost of private schooling for two children in the current financial climate.............??!!).

Anyway, I am looking at houses on Lemsford Road, Ridgmont Road and Verulam Road and am so confused about the 'best' primary school to move near?! They all look good, which is confusing to me as the schools are so hideous here! I have a two year old and a four week old boy. Are there any deemed better than others? Any best to avoid? And, how does the Secondary School system work? Is it down to catchment area.

And, are there better roads to buy in than others?

As you can tell I am SO confused! And our home is under offer- so the pressure is on!!

Thank you so much in advance
Cat

Marlborough is a v nice school (technically my nearest, so have looked round a couple of times) but the problem is that it is not so academic or high performing as the secondaries on the north side. Most of my friends locally have either moved northwards, gone private or crammed for Parmiters to avoid it That's taking it a bit far but I have to admit it wouldn't be my first choice.

The problem is that in theory there isn't a shortage of secondary places in St A - there are plenty of places at FB which are never taken up - the problem is that there are not eenough 'good' schools especially on the south side.

Hmmm, but there will be a shortage when the extra 90 primary kids get to 11!

Personally I think that Marlborough will be like Bernards Heath, it'll become a realistic choice and become more popular. (kind of the best of the "worst") Bernards Heath last year was undersubscribed for 60 places and within only a year is already only a couple of applications away from being oversubscribed for 90 places!

The only secondary school that has had a great reputation throughout the whole of my memory is Beaumont, Francis Bacon used to have a decent reputation, Veralum used to have a good reputation, Sandringham used to have a bad reputation, it can all change!

It's true that there is a trend to move, but with all the new estates (like Hill End) it is becoming harder to move close enough.

Queen, you said on another thread that the linking junior school to secondary would make this worse, not really, it could only make it the same, those who are going to do it are going to do it anyway, it would only alter when they do it. But linking schools could help - you could end up living on the south side and getting Sandringham - if for example Bernard's Heath was linked to Sandringham.

The only other way to ensure that people all over the district get a chance to go to the "good" schools is to change the admissions criteria to a lottery, and personally I think it's better to link junior schools so that kids get a chance to maintain a community.

The north side of st albans isn't just popular because of schools anyway, it's popular because it's lovely! But the demographic of the central area of st albans has changed, (hence the increase in demand for decent school places) and this will mean that schools serving this area will improve.

From Garden fields I wouldn't think you'd be close enough to get in to Sandringham or Beaumont so it'd be either choosing something else or moving. There are always the private schools (or a scholarship to those) or you could start attending church at St George's in Harpenden or you could have a look round Marlborough, Townsend and Veralum to see what you feel about those.

queenofherts thanks for that. We know about the secondary schools issue if we move to other side. We've decided we will cross that bridge when we come too it. given that we have a few years & school may change, or we may find our selves back over where we first started

Hi , we are moving to st. Albans (wheatleys, marshalewick) and I need some advice please. We have to apply for a primary school for our son and Oakwood primary is the nearest school, then skyswood. Which one is better? Tnx

fruly · 25/12/2015 00:00

Hi Lakmalisri....both the primary schools you mention are rated outstanding and both are also very popular and over subscribed. In recent years you need to live within about 300m to get into Skyswood. 'Catchment' for Oakwood I slightly bigger as it takes more children each year. Best to look at the stats and distance calculator on the Hertfordshire website.
