Visiting Birmingham for a weekend - places to visit?

Hi, I'm going to be staying in Edgbaston near the university. What would you recommend I go to see and do while I'm there please, particularly on the Sunday?
Cultural sights, museums, gardens, anything that doesn't cost too much money! I have a car and can drive if needed although was hoping to get around on public transport.
Thanks in advance, Mumsnet!

Winterbourne gardens are in Edgbaston and worth a visit. The Botanical gardens are also round the corner. I prefer Winterbourne. You could combine with a stroll through the university campus (lovely actually) and there is the geological museum on campus (Lapworth). The museum is free. Winterbourne isnt.

The canals are a big part of Birmingham heritage. You could walk the canal from the Vale on campus. You could take a canal boat tour or the water taxi (cheaper). The museum and art gallery are free in the city centre. There's a nice edwardian tea room in there for a cuppa. Check the opening hours tho.

Further out the Lickey hills for a stomping country park style walk. Car park charges.

You could drive to Bournville for a mooch about. The green is really pretty. You can go into the Cadbury world shop without paying admission. Not lots to do tho really.

The university train station will get you into Central brum in a couple of stops.

The jewellery quarter draws a lot of visitors and there are various museums, pubs and cafes and all of the jewellery/gold shops. Bit dull if youre not shopping imo.

Finally cannon Hill park and the MAC (Midlands Art Centre) is nice. Car park charges apply. There's gallery spaces, makers markets, an independent cinema and theatre spaces. There's a cafe. Check what's on. This is a really really short drive from Edgbaston.

City centre wise There's the cathedral, the library, the museum and art gallery (already mentioned), the bull ring and all the usual city centre stuff.

Is this enough to go on?

I really enjoyed the coffin works, pen museum and the Birmingham museum & art gallery

This is amazing, so many ideas. I'd thought about Winterbourne gardens. Love the idea of a canal boat tour! Exciting. I'll run it by my traveling companion - now we have some great options, thank you all so much.

The Pen Museum is extraordinarily dull. Im a fountain pen fan and made a special effort to go. It's nibs. Lots and lots of brass nibs. They do.have a workshop where they make them still, but they werent when I.went.
Jewellery quarter was disappointing, but friends did catacombs and the coffin place which they said was good. Nice walk from city centre along canals.

The central library is wonderful, rooftop gardens, secret rooms, circular rooms ❤️

The Ozzy tribute is still on at the Birmingham Museum if that interests you. Free entry

If you run out of things to do, the train goes through to Worcester which is good for an afternoon: civil war museum, cathedral, Greyfriars House, river walk. The Black Country museum is also aversive by train in the other direction and is well worth a visit. Wightwick Manor is a bit of a drive on the other side of the city but interesting. If you've got a car, I think Clent is nicer than Lickey

The back to backs. We really enjoyed them and found them fascinating, not least because my husband's grandfather grew up in the old back to back slum housing in Birmingham. A walk from Gas Street Basin down by the canal can also be lovely if you want to get away from the city vibe. The canal paths are an oasis of tranquility through the centre of the city.

I thought the pen museum was great. Took my DD who was about 11 at the time. We got to make our own nibs which was really interesting and gave her an interest to try calligraphy.

The university has the Lapworth museum of Geology if you like rocks and fossils.

Thank you all! Great ideas. I'm partial to a walk by the canal, but also good to explore the history of new places..

Coming back to update - we had a good time in Birmingham, thank you.

Enjoyed the Winterbourne Gardens, walking through the university campus, and the museum, especially the cafe (great tip!).

Next time I'm going to see the Botanical gardens, and spend some more time by the canals.
