Newcastle relocate information

Hello, lovely people of Newcastle
We are a family of 4 and are thinking of relocating to Newcastle.
We’ve visited a few times and love how vibrant the city is, that it’s walkable/cyclable, the greenery
I’d love to hear feedback on what it’s like raising kids/living in the city. Specifically:

  • How are the state primary & secondary schools? Are there any particularly exceptional schools?
  • Are there lots of activities for preschoolers and tweens/teens? (We don’t want to move again!)
  • Parents of teens- do you feel that the city is safe enough to give your kids freedom to go into town by themselves etc?
  • Where are the nice/family friendly areas to live? I’ve heard great things about Gosforth and Jesmond areas ,but are there other places that we could be looking into?
  • Is it relatively easy to meet people and establish community? (I appreciate this is often down to how much time/effort you’re willing to put in)
Any information would be very appreciated as we don’t know anyone who lives there

Other areas to look at are Heaton, High Heaton, Jesmond Vale and West Jesmond. You might like Sandyford too. All these are within reach of the stunning Jesmond Dene landscaped valley/park and close to the town centre.

Don't know about schools but the town is friendly and safe. Loads and loads to do for all ages.

Thank you so much 😊

Love Newcastle, I’d also say Gosforth & Jesmond if you can afford it, the friendliest people, lovely quayside market every Sunday, good transport links, close to the beautiful Northumberland countryside & beaches, international airport, both my kids live there.

Welcome to the toon- living here is fab ☺️
I’m a teacher and primary and secondary varies widely by area. I think your starting point needs to be budget. Jesmond and Gosforth can be very pricey. If you let me know what areas you are thinking of specifically I can give you an idea? He’s one for example has multiple primaries, secondaries and private schools.
You might also like to consider Whitley bay, Low fell or whickham which are all in proximity to Newcastle for slightly cheaper.

Hi Honestly, I am not too sure where exactly I want to be around Newcastle.I just know I need to be well connected for getting into the city centre for work and have good schools around I have had a look at Longbenton and Benton prices are good for the houses but I have got no idea why …the same is about areas south of the river.

I personally wouldn’t live in Longbenton/ Benton area. How much are you looking to pay for a house?
South of the Tyne is generally cheaper but no less better connected to the city.

Beata1980 · 27/08/2025 09:31

HI I was looking at the houses around £250k

Longbenton isn't in Newcastle, nor is anywhere south of the river.

Much of what people think of as Newcastle is really Tyneside, North Tyneside, Gateshead and to a lesser extent, South Tyneside.

Not that it really matters, but your £250 000 won't go far in Jesmond or Gosforth, and although Longbenton looks close, it's nothing like Jesmond or Gosforth. Parts of Benton are ok.

littlecreeature · 28/08/2025 12:55

If I was in your position I’d be looking at south of the Tyne. Whickham, Dunston, Low Fell areas of Gateshead are nice and very well connected to the city. Dunston has a lovely walk into town along the river. Primary and secondary schools in whickham are very good.

Nolongera · 28/08/2025 13:39

The last thing i would want to be doing is crossing the river twice a day for work.

I think you might struggle to find a family home for your budget in Jesmond/Gosforth. Have you looked at Kingston Park? Or Great Park Estate? There are also nice areas around the coast like cullercoats, Seaton Delavel and Whitley Bay. Or you could look further north to Morpeth/Cramlington. We live near Stannington (Morpeth) and it’s such a lovely community with excellent schools and because we’re just off the A1 it’s great for commuting to Newcastle/Sunderland.

not Newcastle but Durham is gorgeous. Easy links to Newcastle- ten mins on the train and good bus service. Loads for kids of all ages in both Durham and Newcastle. We moved up north when my two were 7 and 11 and they are now 12 and 16 and have had so many opportunities.
Also good choices of colleges and universities in the area.
You will not regret this move!
