Manchester High School for Girls versus Stockport Grammar

I saw a thread regards SGS versus CHS and thought it gave some really interesting answers. We have a similar question, we have 2 nursery age girls and are debating stockport grammar or manchester high school for girls, DD1 has passed both entrances.

SGS is more convenient but MHSG has much better exam results. SGS is co ed but has class sizes of 20 versus MHSG single sex and class sizes of 15.

Does anyone have children at either, what do you like/dislike?

We just want to eneld up with well rounded, decently educated happy kids.... thanks!

I’m a tutor and have tutored children from both for over 20 years. Man High is much better.

Can I ask why it's much better in your opinion @Cluborange666 ? Also weighing up these two schools currently.

Man High seems to have a much wider ability range (now) than perhaps it did in the past, I see Withington is always top and we haven't applied there because my DD is very musical and I thought music was more centre stage at both SGS and Man High from what I saw, plus both do music scholarships. I would really like to understand what sets Man High apart in your opinion (other than no boys).

Music is great at WGS, what made you doubt this?

Obviously my user name shows bias but I would start them nursery age at Lady Barn and then decide later for Y7. Then you have a natural move at age 11 and could also consider further afield or more specialist school as an option.

Sorry yes should have said because no scholarships available at all at WGS and we (ideally) need that. Also being completely honest from a music point of view I did like the co-ed side of SGS. DD is into playing in bands etc (not just orchestra) and I felt that was a bit stronger at SGS and Man High but clearly good at all three!

Hi, the quality of teaching is much better and the actual teachers are intellectually superior. I mean, I suppose it depends what you want, but I think Man High is a good school, SGS less so. I have been tutoring young people from all the schools in the area for twenty years.

@Atissue123you know that the music scholarships are very variable in what you get don’t you? Some only cover music lessons and not fees.

Yes I know they’re variable although at SGS it’s 25% off fees. Obviously it’s highly competitive to get one.

If your kid is really talented with music then look at Cheetham’s, they have funding from a government scheme which is means tested. Info here https://www.gov.uk/music-dance-scheme
