Affordable places to live in Sussex?

Hi! Husband's work is moving him to Brighton (Ovingdean) so we are going to have to relocate soon. Looking for any recommendations / advice on where to live. He is happy to commute for an hour if necessary. We have a budget of about £300,000 which I know won't get us a lot in Sussex. Where are the best possibilities? DD is 12 so would prefer somewhere relatively safe with decent secondary schools. Very nervous about this move so lots of advice needed please!

Bognor Regis and Littlehampton are good.

Being too close to Brighton it starts to get really expensive.

Agree with this. You'll get a nice 2/3 bedroom for £300k in those places.

I know the area well - live in Sussex and DH commutes to Brighton. It’s a very low budget for Sussex. You could look at some of the cheaper areas of outer Brighton such as Hollingbury for a 2/3 bed ex council house. If you can stretch your budget up to £350 you’d have some options for bed terrace or semi in Henfield which is quite nice, or Sayers Common or Burgess Hill where there are new builds going up. Easy into Brighton from all these places

You could get a 2 to 3xbed flat nearby ovingdean. Check commute time train plus bus

Haywards Heath, you may just about get a very small house, you would definitely get a decent size apartment.

Here’s a house in Felpham, which is on the eastern side of Bognor Felpham house and here’s another Slightly cheaper

Have a look at the houses near the stations between Chichester and Brighton, Barnham, Ford, Arundel etc as he might get fed up with the traffic.

Check out this 3 bedroom semi-detached house for sale on Rightmove

If DH needs to commute to Ovingdean each day, you need to consider Peacehaven, Newhaven or if your budget allows Seaford. Definitely go East rather than West for an easier commute. I wouldn’t consider littlehampton & BR, that would be a hell of a commute.

Or Hailsham/Polegate

Fleurty · 17/03/2025 19:55

Eastbourne is a nice town if you want a bit more going on than peacehaven or newhaven, it is a bit further out but good train links to Brighton. Hailsham is having thousands of houses built so has cheaper prices but the town and services haven't really grown with the new building so are limited.

I can comment well having lived all over London and Brighton too. Can confirm Worthing is a great place if you want:
-A lovely quiet beach
-Beautiful countryside and walking nearby
-Friendly safe community, quite diverse and queer friendly
-Very good cafes restaurants pubs and bars (both traditional and also natural wines bars and small plates etc, craft breweries for a bit of pizazz)
-Good schools
-Leafy parks
-Decent town centre with walkable shops
-Three train stations(!) and an easy enough commute straight to Victoria/East Croydon/Clapham, and Brighton of course
-Decent parking (especially compared to Brighton)
-And affordable homes! I bought my three bedroom house in a good area for only 30k more than my one bedroom flat in Brighton-For us it's been a no brainer and we love it, we're in our 30s and lots of our friends are following suit.
-Best areas: Check it out in person. Personally we're near the station on a leafy nice street, Tarring (West) is also desirable. But the best way to ascertain is to go and walk around.
