Hi,

This is a bit of a random question but any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been househunting for a while but struggling with locations.

Anyway Mansfield has been on my radar for a while and now a few properties have now popped up but finding all these journeys difficult so thought I'd ask the question before I waste my time going back and forth.

I'm a nervous driver and really struggle with hills (to the majority of people they wouldn't even be hills just a slope). At the minute I can't get it under control and ive had to disregard a lot of areas just purely because at the minute I'm struggling to drive around them.

For some reason I thought Mansfield and surrounding areas were reasonably flat but now I'm not sure this is the case?

I've looked on topograpghy charts and it seems high above seas level but don't know of this is indictive of hills. I tried looking at the road system but only so many times I can look at various roads on street view.

So, could I ask some local knowledge please. What is the terrain like in Mansfield in terms of hills / slopes for drivers (I'm looking at Forest town and woodhouse in particular).

To give an idea- I went to Sheffield and found it unmanageable. York was great as pancake flat (but can't afford york).

Thanks for your help 🙂

I live local, mansfield has some quite hilly areas, especially if you class a slope as a hill. Most places locally do too as it is relatively close to the Peak District.

What is it that draws you to Mansfield? Work/family/friends etc.

jackstini · 14/01/2025 23:03

I'm a few miles away and the area does have quite a few hills tbh. Not huge, but more than slopes

Is it hill starts you don't like?
That might be a wild guess but if so, switch to an automatic car - game-changer!

If not - have you looked at Lincolnshire? Much flatter

Allatonce2024 · 14/01/2025 23:09

Lincoln or Hull are very, very flat! I actually did my driving test there because I knew there'd be no hill starts 😂

Or just move somewhere with really good public transport

MarSeaLane · 14/01/2025 23:12

Suffolk/Norfok ( parts of) are flat too…

though I would choose The Netherlands ( except for Brexit).

Littletreefrog · 14/01/2025 23:14

You want Lincoln for flat.

Unless Lincoln has changed a great deal in the last 18 months it is very hilly.

NotMeNoNo · 14/01/2025 23:26

These LiDAR maps show terrain. The dot is Mansfield. Further east there is a lot of flat country around the River Trent/Humber Estuary, and also large parts of Lincolnshire. Then you have Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. Watch out for flooding though!

Sorry you are correct I meant Lincolnshire. Lincoln has a massive hill!

NotMeNoNo · 14/01/2025 23:29

Lincoln is hilly because it's built on a ridge of limestone running north-south through the otherwise flat Lincolnshire (except for the Wolds)

Snowkitty · 15/01/2025 00:54

So assuming this is a serious post??

Lincoln's aptly named Steep Hill was definitely still there a few weeks ago.

However yes much of Lincolnshire is flat (possibly isolated and rural though?). Have you considered Newark or Grantham?

Or as suggested up post, just get an automatic car?

Thank you for your reply. I will have to rethink (or look at getting sn automatic car as some suggested). Really thought the area was flat for some reason. Thanks for your input!

You got it right - hill starts are a problem. Might have to save for an automatic car then!

Hi, yes unfortunately it is a serious post - wish it wasn't- would make my househunting a lot easier. I have looked at those places but found them a bit isolating. Will have another look. Thank you

What area do you need to relocate to? There's a bit of difference between York and Mansfield. Can you pick anywhere?
Is it only driving on a hill that's a problem or is walking too?
Move east of the Pennines southern Lincolnshire, Norfolk area. But you are saying a slope to some is your Hill,?
Sheffield is very hilly but most places are really anywhere near the Pennines.

Ah this is really handy! Thank you!

How about booking some sessions with a driving instructor. It will be cheaper than a new car.

Yes, a new car and house could be rather expensive!!! I struggled with driving lessons as got too use to the driving instructors car as they aren't able to use mine and ended up making matters worse! I'll have to think 🤔

You will be able to find an instructor that will take you out in your car. It would definitely be worth it. A couple of lessons of pure practice and you'll get the confidence you need.

Walking on hills is fine (love walking) just not driving!

My problem is I have a small budget and most areas are not affordable. Need to move ASAP. A lot if Yorkshire (within my budget) seems hilly so I've had my eye on Mansfield but realised I haven't actually been and just 'asummed' it was flat for some reason.

Oh really, I didn't know instructors would use my car. If they would do that then that would work. I've just lost my confidence with it. OK this is very helpful. Thank you.

I really think you should learn to manage hills driving. Even if you find somewhere flat to live you will never be able to leave it otherwise. Get some specific lessons in your own car.

TJNutbrook · 13/07/2025 13:53

I live in Mansfield Woodhouse, near Park Hall Vets and find most f the area fairly flat for walking and driving, I did move here from a hilly part of Derbyshire though. I would say in the main it’s not hilly but I would look at getting some driving in with an instructor to help you.
