Affordable places around york

Hi everyone,
We live inside York at the moment and are renting an apartment. The house prices have gone sky rocketed and we won't be able to afford a good house with a garden space for kids to play around inside York. So, we started looking for houses in nearby villages around York. We thought of dunnington, but it seemed to be far more expensive than we thought.
We travelled through Melbourne a couple of weeks back, it felt very quite and the houses also looked pretty amazing. The primary school on Melbourne seems to be quite nice and has a good reputation. We were mostly concerned about the secondary education as we will fall under the catchment of woldgate school. From what I have heard from people in York, the school might not be as good as ArchBishops or fulford. This post is to ask people who live local to Melbourne/pocklington about the secondary school and if you have kids going into the secondary and your impression about the schooling in general. Appreciate your inputs or suggestions.
Thanks !

It’s having a huge extension built currently because it’s been so intensely over populated due to all the new homes built that it’s been on its knees for a few years.
It was good before and I think people hope it will be very good again once the extension is finished.

That being said it’s in no way competing with arches or Fulford…etc
Way better than market weighton though.
Ultimately you get what you pay for, if you can afford arches/fulford/huntington then go for that but if you can’t then move to Pocklington!

i believe Elvington is in the fulford school catchment area. If you look at the other side to York, Strensall and Huntington areas, Huntington school is very good. Dunnington is very expensive due to it being on the A64.

Lots of kids from Stamford Bridge go to Archies, no school bus though, they need to get the number 10.
I'm in Dunnington and Fulford send school buses.
More houses coming up for sale in the village but usually need some or a lot of updating.
Elvington is Fulford catchment.

We live in that direction and have two kids at a small village primary which is fabulous and two at woldgate including one in yr 11. We've had no issues at all with woldgate very happy my oldest is predicted all 8-9s in GCSEs. I would not choose Archie's over it at all. In September the rebuild will be finished and there will be entirely new facilities - sports, arts, music, classrooms. The art block will be incredible. The area is great for families and still rural.

Hi @sunshinerobots , thank you so much for your kind reply. That's very reassuring. We have decided to move ahead with the purchase of the property in Melbourne , simply because the property gave more value for money and the primary village school is really good. The only downside I see is that there are no local shops for groceries. It always needs going to pocklington. Do you by any chance know if there are any local farm shops around this region.
Also, any idea on the local village community? Are they friendly and is community vibrant?
Sorry, I asked lot of questions here. Really appreciate your feedback if you know of any.

Thanks!

Melbourne is a fabulous village you've made a good choice. The village school is quite big compared to others and so there's quite a lot of activities offered. I think with kids you'll quickly become part of the community and there are clubs in the village - brownies etc.

Shops and groceries is part of a change in mindset when you move out of town! it always takes a bit more planning. You've got aldi and Sainsbury's at pock , there are some local farms that sell meat, fish and chip vans in the village once a week but it is the price paid for living more rurally. It might take a few weeks but you will adjust!

Good luck with the move!
