Relocating to Plymouth

Looking for advice on where to live around Plymouth.

My husband has a job at Derriford hospital starting at the end of summer. We have two children (2 & 4). We currently live in the Jordanhill area of Glasgow.

Our main criteria for location is schools. Our children would be going to Jordanhill so I’m a bit upset they aren’t going there now (league table wise it’s the best state school in Scotland).

Obviously my husband needs to be able to commute to the hospital.

We have a good budget. We think our current house will sell for around 640. We made a very quick visit to Plymouth a couple of months ago but other than that I’ve never been so would appreciate some advice. It’s very daunting moving your whole family somewhere you’ve never really been. Also finding it difficult to find time to visit with having young children and both working.

We have a drive around Mannamead when we were there but it maybe seemed a bit busy. I’m looking at Plympton and Plymstock. Can anyone tell me what the difference is between these places it terms of what they have to offer? Also what about Ivybridge?

Can anyone give any advice on specific schools that are good in the area?

Does anyone have knowledge of both Glasgow and Plymouth that could compare the areas for me?

We don’t know a single sole in Plymouth so to say I’m terrified to make such a big move would be an understatement.

TIA x

Just to add to this. Someone had said to look at the South hams area as the weather is better around there? And it does look like a beautiful place to live.

Try posting on the Plymouth Gossip Girls page on Fb. There are loads of members on there that will be able to help you out.

I live in Plymouth but not the areas you have suggested. Everyone seems to love Plympton/Plymstock but I am not a fan. South Hams would be nicer, also maybe look at Modbury/Kingsbridge areas. Commute will be a bit longer though.

Roborough also, that's near to the hospital. I am not sure on schools for any of those areas though

South Hams has stunning beaches, unspoilt countryside and villages. Kings bridge is lovely town to visit but know nothing re schools OP.
Plynouth is not the most attractive city as was bombed and buildings replaced with hideous soulless concrete but harbour regenerated area good for cafes etc. Depends if you like rural or city/town life. Rent first so get to know area or temporary hospital house then choose more carefully. You should get nice house for that £

Im south Devon, Plymouth had quite a few rough areas, you’d be far better going outside of the city. South Hams, Ivybridge, Buckfast, Ashburton. Far nicer. Good luck.

Sorry I got my post deleted as it felt accidentally a bit identifying. Plymouth is honestly quite nice. I’d agree look at south hams and Ivybridge areas. Manamead and parts of peverell are nice within the city. Tavistock is nice but a longer commute. Higher Compton primary, st Matthew’s (near derriford) and Thorbury (also near derriford) seem nice. Private primaries are kings and Plymouth college. I think
theres a third. Anyway they are nice too.

i understand it’s hard to rent in Plymouth but that would be ideal to get to know the area . Good luck - it’ll be fine !
