Living in Stamford Bridge... pros and cons

Hi all, just wondering if anyone on here lives (or has previously lived) in Stamford Bridge near York, and can share their views on life there. It's one of a few places around York and the East Riding that we are considering for a forthcoming move. Seems a nice village, but I do wonder how much of a pain it is getting in and out over that small bridge at peak times (e.g. commuting to York), especially in holiday season if there's a lot of traffic heading to/from the coast.

I would also be wary of living close to the river given the risk of flooding, although I get the impression that flood protection for the village is better than it used to be.

Any pros/cons would be good to know (facilities, community, safety, housing market - whatever springs to mind really), and feel free to PM me if preferred. Thanks in advance.

I don't live there but a close relative and family does and seems to like living there. Relative cannot drive for medical reasons but seems to get buses to work fine. Their kids go to good schools in York and have found it relatively easy to get part time jobs in the area as they have got older ( now teenagers). They have lived there for getting on for twenty years and seem to like it - plenty to do, they like to go to the east coast and also say it is easy to get to bigger places like leeds. I've never heard them mention flooding in Stamford bridge, only in York itself. However they do live well set back from the river near the cricket pavillion.

Where do you live now? Are you set on Stamford Bridge or would you consider elsewhere in the East Riding? Where do you need to commute to?

Sorry I should also say my relative commutes into York for work most days I think although could still be working from home some of the time.
Whenever we have visited ( a couple of times a year ) we have not encountered long tailbacks at the bridge !

I grew up there, don't live there any more but go back regularly. Bridge is totally fine, coast traffic can be a pain on sunny summer days buts it's manageable and you get used to it - busy times are predictable and you allow for it. Most of the time there is no issue. Flooding was never an issue for the vast majority of houses, but flood defenses protect the centre of the village now too.

I know people who still live there and they seem to like it. Not sure what the school is like these days, but if that's relevant I'd be wary of the secondary it's in catchment for. There are other potential alternatives.

Had an ex live there many years ago..the bus into york was regular and the pubs etc were always canny!

I found everyone friendly!

DadManners · 15/04/2023 14:27

Thanks everyone, that all sounds fairly positive. 🙂

@SandraDeee We're not far from the coast just now but need to be a lot closer to York - we are looking at the east side of the city itself and also other nearby villages, so SB is just one possibility (we saw a nice house there which prompted the question).

I know this thread is a few weeks old, but just in case you are still looking...
Don't worry at all about housing and flooding, unless you're planning on living in the square, and even then the flood defenses have made that almost irrelevant. It's a really safe village, with a lot of friendly residents and things going on.
The bridge can be a pain, but it's usually a very specific half hour or so at rush hour but just allow a bit of extra time. Coast traffic isn't usually too much of an issue as people will let you out onto the A166.
It has everything there, doctors, chemist, shops, takeaways, river walks and easy bus ride to York.
I don't know if you need schools, but SB primary is well regarded in the village (lots of friends with children there). Re secondary, I'm not sure how Woldgate is doing at the moment. A lot of children go to Archbishops which is a great school. It's not catchment but everyone I know who's wanted to go there has got in, sometimes late in the summer from a waiting list place, but usually from the outset.

@Oakdog Yes our search goes on (and on!) but I think we're making progress. Your advice is welcome, thanks - it's helping us to build a realistic picture and keep the drawbacks in perspective (and schools comments echo what we thought).

Regarding the coast traffic, I always have mixed feelings when looking at houses on the new estates off the A166 as there seem to be some decent options (detached, well-insulated, should be in good condition and so on) but with Saxon Gate for example, the only way on and off the estate is via the A166, so if that gets snarled up with a big queue heading back from the coast (or just heavy traffic through the village towards York in the morning) then I imagine it could get a bit tiresome. At least with the lower half of the village there should be less exposure to queues on Main St, plus the option of heading down to the A1079, busy though it is.

I always think the Catton side of the village is nicer anyway as the new developments on the main road seem v on tip of each other.
Re the road, if you were in the development on the same side as the rest of the village (not sure what it's called) turning left onto the A166 then left again and using a cut through will bring you out by the doctors. This is fine with coast traffic, so helps at the weekend but locals know so not so useful for commuting.

DadManners · 10/05/2023 14:02

Yes that's the development I was referring to - I see what you mean about the cut through so there would maybe be a bit of a queue to get to that left turn off the A166 and then loop round to rejoin the (shorter) queue near the bridge. I agree the Catton side is nicer - the new developments still feel a bit soulless at the moment, I suppose that's the compromise for new housing stock, always pros and cons to each option.
