Moving to Teddington

Hi all

After a long time looking for a new place to call home and start the education journey for our 4 year old (who starts reception in Sept 23) and 1 year old, we have finally landed on Teddington and hope to move from north London in time for school application deadline - but it’s not a given.

Having visited multiple times and forensically researched, I have no doubt that it’s a fantastic place to live for a young family like us.

My main questioning is around primaries - where we are now a lot has changed since covid in terms of catchments and getting into sought after state primaries. Is it the same in Teddington? Do we need to make sure we are in close proximity to the likes of Collis and moved in by January? Or can we relax a bit? Any view on Collis vs Hampton Wick Infants (+any others we should consider)? Are there any merits in going down the private route (Newland House?) / would this be a safe bet if we couldn’t meet the Jan deadline?

Any local knowledge and advice would be greatly appreciated, plus any other nuggets for families moving to the area :-)

Sorry - should have clarified, it is now easier to get into the best state primaries where we are currently because birth rates have come down and families have moved out of London.

Hi. Good choice. Teddington is a great place to live, and your timing is good as all the primary catchments have increased in the last couple of years (birth rates are down, and there's a Brexit/Covid effect too). All the schools are great. They have offer day admissions stats on their websites, so you should be able to look up last distance offered on March 1st 2022 for a rough idea. Bear in mind, it's walking distance, not crow flies.

Unless you plan to move again, it might also be worth thinking about secondary catchments. Teddington School is the obvious choice, but if you're in north Teddington then Turing House is popular (they have an admissions point in north Teddington). Or if you're near Teddington Lock, then Grey Court might be an option, with a walking route over the bridge.

@Sophiecf1 Hello, I just wondered how your move went and which school you ended up going for..?
We are a year behind you, have a 3 year old and planning to move before next January for a Sept 2024 start! Would appreciate any advice, thank you
