Relocating

Hi,

I am considering relocating from the North East to the Brighton and Hove area. I haven’t visited since before the first lockdown (I’ve been pregnant), when I mentioned that I was looking to view some houses next month to a friend she told me Brighton has a massive drug problem. On my previous visits I wasn’t aware of their being a significant issue that would have put me off relocating.

We currently live in Newcastle where there are areas of the city where drug misuse is an issue. I was just wondering if anyone local could give me some ‘real’ insight. We have a young family so are looking at Hove or Roedean. We are relocating as we have family in London and would like to be closer now we have our own family.

Thanks x

The drug misuse issue is mainly in the central shopping and tourist areas. Similar to any large city.Brighton has become a "draw" and many of the addicts are from other parts of the UK or travel to Brighton as the tourists and locals are quite generous to begging requests and there are a lot of drug support services - it's sunnier than Newcastle/Manchester/Liverpool etc. It is also very much a tourist city near the seafront these days and there are a lot of clubs and hotels, revellers at the weekend so drugs do follow that. There are people begging on the main shopping streets and sitting in sleeping bags on the pavements. No one has ever been aggressive to me.

A lot of the drug hostels are located in central areas ( such as the YMCA) and along Old Steine and the seafront but the council has started to locate "halfway houses" in more residential neighbourhoods

There are some homeless hostels in Hove this is an example:www.wikiwand.com/en/St_Patrick%27s_Church,_Hove#Homeless_Hostel

Roedean is pretty quiet I should think and most of Hove is pretty family orientated too. Fiveways is a really nice family area, near good schools and several parks away from the main drag.

echoing above. You
Only see these issues in central Brighton and Hove. St James’s st , steine, North street and Western Road areas

@FrancescaSwan Plymouth is nowhere near Brighton and Hove, also this is an old thread. I'd start a new thread! But just to wonder - what does your DH think about you separating, which is essentially what you're proposing, and only 'visiting' at weekends? How much time will he get to spend with you around travelling up and down every weekend? Do you work as well?

@FrancescaSwan You would be better starting your own thread about Plymouth.

For what it's worth, Plymouth waterfront is beautiful.
