Moving to Surrey, Need help

Hi All, I am looking to move to surrey. I have a job in Woking but can work from home 4/5 days and my wife is looking to get a job in London. She cannot drive so we would need to be near the train station. Lastly we have a 2.5 year old son.

I've been looking at locations and have it down to either:

Woking, East Molesey, Weybridge, Walton-on-Thames or Ashford.

These all have good schools near the train station and have good links to London. I wondered if anyone has any recommendation for these areas? I went around Woking today and thought it was ok, nice sports centre though.

Thankyou in advance any knowledge on these areas would be really appreciated!

Just to make you aware East and West Molesey are very different! But EM is great! Although as I said the train service is one of the worst - often cancelled.

Have lived in East Molesey and Woking - budget-wise you will get much, much more for your money in Woking and the trains are substantially better to Woking. I wouldn't pay too much attention to the sites you are reading re Woking - it's a vocal minority. If you are Catholic, St John the Baptist is one of the top mixed comps in the country. Good luck with your decision

East and West Molesey aren't that different, especially if you're close to the divide - smaller houses, but still a perfectly nice area! Train service isn't too bad, we've been commuting from Hampton Court for years and it really doesn't go down that often - plus you've got the option of a cab from Kingston or Surbiton if you miss the train.

Thankyou again. The other thing which kinda concerns me is why thr prices in woking have stagnated while everywhere else has gone up. I'd it undervalued or getting worse 🤔

I know it's a bit of a silly reason but I would like it to go up in value after 5+ years 😅

Have a look at Staines - it's 35 minutes to Waterloo and a 20 minute drive to Woking. Walking routes from the station are very safe.

Thanks. I'll have a look at Staines 😊

Prices in Woking have stagnated because many people only choose to live there on the basis of its train service to Waterloo. Which is less of a draw now that people are WFH.

Woking looks good on paper but it has a strange atmosphere. I grew up there and there’s not a chance in hell I’d raise my own children there. It’s not particularly awful or rough, it’s just got a dead end feel about it that is hard to describe.

I think with a budget of £410k you should definitely look at Ashford and Staines, you will get loads more for your money there than Walton and Weybridge.

Also, another pro for Ashford - it's only one stop outside the Oyster zone so is a cheaper season ticket than stations further out, and also there are regular buses to the tube station (Hatton Cross), so your wife could potentially consider that an option.

I think there are plans to extend the Oyster zone to Ashford and Staines.

I often pick up my DD at Hatton Cross as she lives and works on the Piccadilly Line. It's only about 20p more to continue on to Heathrow where there are other buses.

@CraftyGin Yeah I know the idea has been floating around for years but don't think it's actually a solid plan yet, sadly. Just been a petition and suggestion at this stage I think.

But yes, it's easy to get from here to other stations in order to use an Oyster and keep travel cheaper. I often get the bus to Hatton Cross to go into London.

Plus there are actually a lot of nice roads and good schools in Ashford. It definitely has a lot of plusses.

Hiya!

We’re wanting to move out of NW London and to Surrey in hope of more space, greener streets and access to strong performing schools. We have 2 boys, one of which will be starting reception in Sept 2023.

I wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations of parts of Surrey or lower SW London to consider? Ideally the commute into London is a manageable one (happy to make a short drive to another station if it means a faster train into Waterloo). Our budget is between £850K-£880K, a few musts are: 4 bedrooms, off street parking, a decently sized garden and access to academically strong performing state primaries.

We presently have (1) East Molesey (but more towards the end where it just meets West M and is close to St Albans Catholic Primary School). (2) Thames Ditton (any suggestions of strong performing schools would be great!!). (3) Teddington/Twickenham (not been able to find anything that fits our criteria within budget). (4) Surbiton (but can’t find any strong performing state schools. Looks like more go private). (5) Weybridge (once again, budget really limits our options - any roads to try and target ?)
