Lower Caversham safe area?

14 replies

Hi

I was thinking about renting a property on Amersham Road in Lower Caversham, but I'm a bit worried about my car as it's street parking. Does anyone know what the crime level is like around there and if it's a rough area?

Thanks Smile

@Catmummyof2

Which sort of area do you live in at the moment?
I live in Crawley Wear Sussex. Near the town Center but the house is surrounded by a 6 foot brick wall and I park on a driveway so not really affected by the area too much. Thanks for the info though, I'm reconsidering now

You already did a thread about this a few weeks ago. Lower Caversham and especially the Amersham Road area is one of the highest crime and anti social behaviour areas in Reading, probably marginally beaten by the Whitley area.
I just checked a load of arras on the police postcode checker and Basingstoke has more crime. Tilehurst is nearly on a par and woodley which I thought was a nice area, has more crime

What does it compare though? Number of cases? Basingstoke is a massive area in comparison to Lower Caversham so it's going to have more cases.
When I was a child and the Amersham Road estate was being built we weren't allowed to walk up there because of the rep! And I only lived 10 mins away.

Caversham is very nice. I can't say anything about crime in the area but I do know that overall Caversham is a lovely place to live. Caversham is north of the river and is generally considered to be the 'posh' part of Reading.

Lower Caversham has improved immensely in the last 10 years. I am considering downsizing to Caversham and much prefer lower Caversham to Caversham Heights. It has lovely riverside walks, and Caversham itself feels more like a village with its own library, pubs, cafes and shops.

This house is £400k and is just off Amersham Road. You can walk to the station and river.

I'm told it used to be quite bad but over time people have bought the council houses and more property is owners there now. I won't be walking around the area, just in and out of my car and into the house

It compares number of cases. I'm assuming it done equally no matter what postcode or area you put in, as otherwise it wouldn't be very useful. When I put the house postcode it diverts to Caversham

Honestly I'm So confused, I don't know what to think. People have such mixed views on it. Its not going to be long term and I'm not going to walk around the area or up and down the street, but I'd like to feel safe in my house. The location is certainly handy but when I searched a detailed breakdown of people living in this specific area, it said mostly unskilled manual workers and there was little house ownership - and a lot of social housing, and that was a recent search 🤷‍♀️

I lived in Lower Caversham from the early 80s until 2003. Its probably changed loads, but that's the reputation it has.

Hate to say it but you were right! It's awful! Can't wait to move now...
