Hi all,
Anybody living or knowing of Kimberley in Nottingham? What are the schools like?
Primary and secondary? The house prices seems good and there seems to be a big Sainsbury's and all. But just want the opinion from the locals.. We are moving from Gloucestershire Smile

From what you say you want I'd say Attenborough is perfect. Easy to get to m1. I don't understand the west bridgford hype, I've always felt it's overrated (I lived there for about a year). Unless you buy a huge house there with a driveway parking is horrendous. It's very yummy mummy, if that's your thing then great but I wouldn't choose to live there. If you want a village , a bit further out are Risley and Breaston, both very close to M1 junction 25 so great for commuting, good schools, more village atmosphere.

I disagree that Beeston is a proper town. Yes it has a “town centre” ie a shopping area but it’s a built up suburb of Nottingham, not a separate town. It’s one of the nicer ones though.

Lou333 · 29/06/2021 18:32

Completely agree with you @AquaticLicence. Not enough houses on the market. The ones on the market go
Like hot cakes. The Woodthorpe house we were interested in was sold yesterday and came into the market only last Wednesday! It's insane!

Thanks @Silenenutans. I will definitely keep an eye out for the places you mentioned.

@ginbramble I know! I've also wondered why WB prices are high. Im definitely not a yummy mummy! Grin Would be totally lost in a yummy mummy world!

Thanks all again for your responses.
Just seen a house online in a place called Stragglethorpe. What's the view on it? I noticed it's closer to Cotgrave which I believe is not good.

That big house in Stragglethorpe is on its own on a busy main road, I drove past it the other day.

I would come and explore the area a bit. I've noticed there's a bit of a thing in the Midlands, people moving from a more expensive area, find they can buy the biggest/nicest house in the village, but actually find it a bit hard to get into the community and in a few years it's up for sale again.
It's one thing if you've grown up in the area and have a social network with the well off farming/country types, but the rest of the school run families might be a bit daunted.

I would look for somewhere near a good primary school, near the play park where plenty of friends for your DC will be in popping round distance. Or go into one of the city suburbs where there's a bit more going on. You might not even need your whole budget.

Silenenutans · 29/06/2021 21:47

West Bridgford is so expensive because of the schools. There are two secondaries, both good and all the primaries that feed into them are good too. You literally cannot go wrong, in general terms (there will be individual exceptions, of course). It's an expensive island of educational reliability.

If you do look there, take care to be well inside the catchment for a primary, not at the edges, as they risk becoming a no-man's land in an oversubscribed year (so being sent to the least popular school in the area, whichever that is that year).

You really must visit and spend some time around Nottingham. Drive around, walk around, visit shops, cafes etc. You'll get a feel for it pretty quickly.

GloomyWaters · 30/06/2021 01:03

Bingham would be perfect for yr budget. Toothill secondary school is ofsted outstanding .

Check out the new David Wilson homes... stunning.

GloomyWaters · 30/06/2021 01:06

The house at Stragglethorpe is right on the main road...tons of traffic. Been up for sale a few times over the years.

Anordinarymum · 30/06/2021 01:06

Sorry but it had to be said

Have you seen my friend ?

Victoria Wood anyone ?? :)

Lou333 · 30/06/2021 07:39

@NotMeNoNo Ah! We live in a village and not sure whether we can be counted as a well off family but I wouldn't be put off from buying a good house because I think I won't get along with the rest of the families (so far I haven't had any issues with neighbours/community despite not growing up here). If the area is good, the school is good and the house is good, why not! Just wanted to find out whether it was a good village but reading what everyone is saying I think WB kind of area is still better so I'm going to let that house go Smile

@Silenenutans thank you so much for your suggestion. I have put few viewings for this Saturday in WB. And I will check the school catchment areas in the mean time for those houses.. Smile

Lou333 · 30/06/2021 07:43

@GloomyWaters yeah, that house is right next to a busy road and over our budget as well so definitely letting that go.
I have my eyes on Bingham too. I will check the David Wilson houses. I like their quality I have a friend who has a David Wilson house. Thank you Smile

@Lou333 you sound pretty clued up, I'm sure you will be fine wherever you go for 🙂.

SamusIsAGirl · 30/06/2021 11:12

I don't have much to add but seeing this thread makes me so glad I GTFO'd when I was 18.

Having said that Nottingham and Kimberly have decent transport links - there is the tramway and one of the termini is close to Kimberly. Derby is a mainline station.

AquaticLicence · 30/06/2021 20:11

This popped up on my right move feed today

Dull house but room and budget for improvement perhaps

Lou333 · 30/06/2021 21:39

Thanks @AquaticLicence. I saw this house and showed it to my DH too as Papplewick is on my list thanks to this thread.
We checked the flooding warning in Attenborough and both houses are in zone 3 Confused So cancelled the viewings. So got time to view more houses. I'm hoping I'll have some time to explore the areas a bit more this weekend (depending on our toddlers mood Grin)

I live in Nuthall (next to Kimberley), grew up here, chose to move back recently and am quite surprised by some of the responses here. Kimberley town centre itself is nothing special - there’s a big supermarket and a few smaller shops - but the transport links are excellent, Nuthall has a really nice community spirit, the primary schools are all good (Larkfields has a very good reputation). There’s a great retail park 2 mins one way, and nottingham city centre 15 mins the other way with a tram link.

I wouldn’t live in the centre of Kimberley just as I wouldn’t live in the middle of any town, but some of the surrounding areas are absolutely fine. Some really nice houses in Watnall too.

There’s a lot of chat about places like West Bridgford but it is so overpriced because of its reputation as being a bit posh.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/06/2021 21:47

I'm in Nottingham and definitely agree with suggestions of Beeston Attenborough, chilwell or West Bridgeford.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/06/2021 21:48

Though I live in Lenton and I love it.

ArnoldBee · 30/06/2021 21:52

Hasn't Stragglethorpe just had a crematorium built there?

RAOK · 30/06/2021 22:05

I’m glad you’ve vetoed Kimberley.

West Bridgford, Ladybay, Ruddington, Beeston and Wollaton are lovely areas with good schools.

Vicliz24 · 30/06/2021 23:27

Newark is lovely. On the Main East Coast line and you'd get a lovely house for your budget. It's 20 miles from Nottingham city centre but very accessible by either road or rail .

Lou333 · 03/07/2021 14:53

Thank you all for your responses. Sorry I couldn't reply back straightaway (it's been hectic juggling a toddler and full time work!)
We came to Nottingham for the weekend and seen few houses. So far like a house in WB (a bit over our price) and another house in Mapperly. Lots to think about and decide whether we are going to put in an offer to one of them. Got another viewing tomorrow in WB too.
I was just going through schools in Mapperly. Anybody's kids going to schools in Mapperly atm? Westdale, Porchester and Mapperly plains primary is close by to the house I mentioned before. There's also Goods Shepard Catholic school but not sure whether we will be inside the catchment area.
