Hello Everyone,
We are considering moving to Kenley/ Purley area from Forest Hill. Please can anyone help me with local info ?
Are these areas safe?
Are they family friendly?
How are the local primary/secondary schools?

Thanks in advance your any insight into the areas.

I lived in Kenley until 2018, was there 4 years, that was after many years in Peckham/ED so very similar to you. I really liked it there, it feels quite a friendly place and my ds who was 3-6 enjoyed being there. It’s fairly diverse, unlike some suburbs which I liked.

Purley itself is ok if a little bland, there’s not all that much to the high street but there is the bloody massive Tesco. Never felt unsafe there myself, I would walk from Purley station to Kenley after work often around 9pm.

Ds was at Harris in Kenley, although it seemed ok and gets good ofsted reports it did seem to have very high staff turnover. There’s a large secondary up in Riddlesdown which is fairly well regarded.

In Kenley the more expensive roads are above the station on the hill- the houses in the valley are cheaper, but are walkable from Purley station which has much better links than Kenley which is a slow, stopping service.

What I really loved was the proximity to green spaces. There is Riddlesdown common, Kenley aerodrome and common and Foxley wood is a hidden gem. It’s about a 10 minute drive to get you to the North Downs way in Caterham. Also v good for the M25 which is also about 10 mins drive.

I have lived in quite a few south London areas and despite being Croydon council, I really liked Kenley.

Thanks so much for your insight into the area! Purley did feel very bland with just the usual high street franchise shops.
Kenley feels very different. It looks mainly residential and I like the fact that you have so much woodland around.
Do you know anything about Hayes Primary School?
Thanks for you help

It’s a while back now but I believe it’s got a good reputation, we were offered a place there, but decided against it as we lived almost next to Harris. Hayes is at the top of the hill (which is a steep, looong hill!) and would have been a 15 minute walk. The traffic can get pretty snarled up at peak times, particularly around the station so it wouldn’t be much fun driving it. I guess it depends how close you are to it.

One other thing is parking in the valley is tight- fine in the daytime but come 6pm you may well end up a couple hundred yards from your door. We were near lower road and all the roads round there have that problem.

Kenley is safe and family friendly. I'd say Purley is more mixed with some nice safe areas and a few edgier bits.

Nothing against those as areas but Croydon council is currently bankrupt so you may want to read up on that - i Imagine it will have a big effect on local services over the next few years. Croydon town centre which would be your nearest shopping centre is very run down - there was meant to be a large westfield development which was stuck in planning for years - I think it's now canned but means that loads of stuff has closed down and it's just really depressing!

I considered sending my daughter to the secondary Harris Purley. In the end I decided against it - one of the main reasons being that as she started meeting up with friends at weekends after school I didn't really want her default location to be Croydon which it would have been from there as I don't think it's the safest of town centres.

Not sure what age your children are but Woodcote secondary is fairly good I think. Not so sure on primaries.
