Moving to Letchworth

Hey :)

Looking to find out what Letchworth is like to live in! We are first time buyers moving out from London in search of green space and delicious weekend coffees (!) with a plan to start a family in the next few years..

We know Hitchin is super close by with a more developed town centre and are wondering if it feels like Letchworth could become more developed / up-and-coming in the future?

Any info would be super helpful :)
Thank you!

This is probably way too late for you, but we moved to Letchworth from London earlier this year and really love living here. Nice houses, able to easily walk most places, green and just feels lovely to live in. Lots of nice places to go for walks nearby. Certainly since we moved here we like the town centre. It’s not massive but it has some shops and some cafes/restaurants. We also moved with the intention of starting a family soon.

Hitchin does have a nicer town centre, but Letchworth you can really walk pretty much everywhere which is a big plus. It appears that you can also get more for your money in Letchworth- we certainly did. Easy enough to go to Hitchin for shopping sometimes abs there is free parking on Sunday’s there.

Love where we moved to!

Hi everyone- We too are looking to move to Letchworth and have an offer accepted on a house. However, I am still slightly concerned by the fact it’s a leasehold. Owned by Letchworth heritage council. Does anyone have experience living in a leasehold house in this area? Would be great to know your experiences on making updates to your house and the ground rent/fees.
Thanks :)

We have a leasehold house with the Heritagr Foundation. Ground rent is £10 per year. You need to get permission for any works such as extensions/conservatories from the Foundation however that isn't just because it is leasehold but because the house is in the character area so they restrict what can be done to maintain the character. Their website has all information about what they generally will allow. We haven't had to apply as not done any major work but have heard from others it can be a headache so I suppose it depends on how important doing the work is.
We love Letchworth and it is a great place for small children (lovely parks, family friendly brewery, the art gallery has a kids studio that is free to use). The streets are wide and green so great for walking especially with toddling kids.

Thanks so much @letchworthmum
We have a 6 week old so it’s great to hear another mum’s speak highly of the area.
The house is a fixer upper (mainly on the inside) but over time I think the windows will need replacing - but I guess it’ll be like for like white pvc rather than anything hyper modern! But that’s okay - it’s nice they want to preserve the history.

You made the right choice moving to Letchworth. I prefer Letchworth to Hitchin and really not trying to be bias as we had an option to live in either towns.
Letchworth has as nice a town, better housing housing (Hitchin a lot of terrace housing with no parking), Hitchin is like a concrete jungle in comparison. Plus Letchworth has more facilities and generally a nicer vibe.
