Where should we move to in Suffolk?

Hi all,

Me & my partner are looking to leave London (like the rest of London) and move to the countryside - we grew up south of London, but found the value of houses in Suffolk to be incredible in comparison!

I wondered if anyone had any advice on where to move to?

Wants:

2+ bed cottage with manageable garden, within walking distance of a cute village/small town with a couple of nice pubs/cafes, and a longer walk/short drive to a larger town - to ensure we don’t completely isolate ourselves from society, as we’re still young

Surrounded by beautiful countryside for walks (I like the seaside too, but partner is less bothered)

Partner is a Nanny, so rich areas reasonably short drive away (up to an hour, but ideally less)

2 hour commute to central London (I should be working 2/3 days in the office from now on, I wouldn’t do a 2 hour+ commute 5 days a week)

£450k absolute maximum budget

Can anyone help, please?

I’ve heard good things about Bury St Edmonds, Woodbridge & Sudbury.

Thanks in advance!

We used to live just outside Sudbury in a village called Cavendish. Absolutely beautiful. There's a small village shop in walking distance, but it's a hop in the car to the nearest shop (A Co-Op) and a drive into town. There's a village green which is host (in normal times) to several events throughout the year and there are a couple of very nice pubs serving good food.

Long Melford would be my recommendation however as there's a bit more going on. It's very lovely, good pubs, a high street with a variety of shops and a short drive into Sudbury. I recall there being an annual market of sorts as well. You also have things like Kentwell Hall in walking distance which has lots of events through the year, again, in normal times.

Thanks for the advice, those places you’ve mentioned are lovely - would you recommend downgrading on the cottage and living there, or living in a less well-known village just outside these places? As Cavendish & some of the other places are quite pricey in comparison (but based on the photos, definitely seem worth it)

Bury at Edmunds is lovely, and surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Thanks for those links, BigSkyLife! Still worried they’re quite isolated, but maybe I’m worrying for nothing? And they’re still a short-ish drive to Bury St. Edmunds...

Do lots of research.

A friend moved from London (born and bred) to Suffolk. He has a bit of a love hate relationship with it. Often says that there are lots of people living in beautiful houses but have no money to spend on them as employment situation isn't great.
