Many people are not aware that Gaelic Medium Education is an option for everyone. The Gaelic School is the only school with a city wide catchment, based in Leith Bun-Sgoil Taobh na Pàirce, Edinburgh’s Gaelic Primary School caters for nursery and primary pupils from all over the city. The children are taught the full curriculum through the medium of Gaelic, whether or not Gaelic is the language of the home. Being bilingual is a great benefit to any child, regardless of which languages he or she speaks.

Resurrecting this if I may. Do many children from non Gaelic speaking homes go to Taobh na Pàirce?

The majority of children at Taobh na Pàirce come from non Gaelic speaking homes.

That’s good to know thanks! I’m quite keen on the idea but I’m just doubting my own ability to teach myself Gaelic and help with homework though I’d be very interested to. Also we are quite a distance from the school which is not ideal and I wonder what that will mean for friendship groups. I’ve been googling and I see there’s some controversy about where the secondary school may end up as well. However it does seem like an exciting idea. Open to any and all information if there’s anything else you’d like to share about it.

Children attend Taobh na Pàirce from across the city and East/Mid/West Lothian. There is school transport if you are more than 2miles from the school, my daughter enjoys the bus trip and also has become friends with children in other year groups due to this.
We often have to travel further for play dates, but not really an issue, she also has local friends attending different schools.

Parents often worry about homework, but when they start to get homework it comes bilingually, there are great online resources to support it.

Learning Gaelic alongside your child is enjoyable (some parents have basic Gaelic while others have become fluent).

Comann nam Pàrant (Dùn Èideann is Lodainn) is the local group that represents parents and children across the Edinburgh and Lothians. All the latest information regarding school development is on their blog.
High school discussions are ongoing, however capacity issues have been alleviated with S1 and S2 pupils transitioning to the newly-refurbished Darroch Annexe.
