Hi all we are looking to relocate up north and found a house we like in old Cornforth, however after a google lots of negative stories about anti social behaviour in west Cornforth. Is this an area to avoid? Any Durham villages we could consider instead? Would need schools for a year 5 and year 8 child...

I don't want to be rude about an area but it's not somewhere I would live. There are other villages that aren't too expensive like Brandon, Bowburn, Newton Hall (not a village but a housing estate), Browney where the house prices aren't bad. What drew you to West Cornforth to begin with?

It’s a house in old Cornforth looked lovely! Thanks for the other recommendations, we will keep looking.

Oh dear. I wouldn't live there. Sorry.
I remember once passing through on a bus and the bus being pelted with rocks ( I know this could be an isolated incident but other stories I've heard have led me to believe that anti-social behaviour isn't uncommon there).
I know people who live quite near there.

Dodgy as fuck. There are nicer places.

Just seen you have a Y8, not an 8 year old. Secondaries around Durham - Johnston is very good but not for everyone, FBEC in Ferryhill also good. Quite a lot of competition for places, esp at Johnston.

Park side in Spennymoor has got a great reputation and Brandon/Browney are currently in the catchment for both there and the Johnston 😊

Thanks all, that’s a definite no then. What about west rainton. Also thanks for the info on schools.

We want to move north, in east mids right now and from west mids. I’ve had a horrible past, think grooming gangs. I’ve had years of therapy and a lovely life now but struggling being close to where it happened and around my family so as my Dh works from we can move anywhere. We live Durham and also north York’s and Wales too. So looking all over. Wales is out and have narrowed it down to n York’s or Durham, we are visiting again in two weeks to drive around more, but it’s hard to know about individual villages before moving. We could rent I know but I’d rather not if we can help it. Thanks again

Sorry to hear about your past experiences OP. I can't speak for all of Durham, but I can recommend Langley Moor, Meadowfield and Browney, these would all put you in catchment for good schools (assuming they have spaces for an in year move) and have good bus links/driving distance into Durham for the train if you need it.

My granny used to live over by the coast in Durham. As I recall, there were some nice houses in Houghtonlespring, Chesterlestreet and Seaham, although I don’t know what they’re like now. As kids we went to the beach in Seaham and it was nice.

West Cornforth is nicknamed 'doggie' for a reason by locals ....

Old cornforth is a nice place to live. The new school has a good reputation.I have lived in far worse places.Only down side for me was outsiders giving it a bad name
