Moving to York

Hi, were thinkiyof moving from London to York. Looking at the area around poppleton and nether poppleton at the moment.
Does anyone have any advice? Is it a friendly area? What's the transport into town like? Is it walkable? We'll be looking for a good secondary school too so any advice there would also be much appreciated!

We've just had an offer accepted on a house in York, moving from Manchester. We thought of Poppleton but there are so few houses available we had to widen our search. In terms of schools and local area, we also liked Fulford, Bishopsthorpe and Heworth. Those areas all have good secondary schools, from the research we've done. Hopefully someone will come along who had teenaged kids there who will be able to advise better on schools.

You’ll be lucky to get a state secondary place at the schools nearest Poppleton, Heworth or Fulford.

Poppleton is not walkable into the city centre but there is a park and ride right across the road and a train into the centre

Thanks @CarrieBlue,
Is that because the secondary schools are all over subscribed? Looking the website it seems like York high might have previously had a bad reputation. Is that the case?
Is it not walkable because there are no paths or because it's too far?

Thank you both for answering!

There aren’t any really bad schools in York but there is a lot of snobiness about which are best, hence over subscription for some schools. It’s about 4 miles from Poppleton into the city centre along a busy route (there are pavements) - not a pleasant walk.

Unemployment in York is forecast to reach 28% in the current climate - whether that might affect your decision?
