Moving to Truro

Hello We are considering relocating to Truro, as possible job there. I’m originally from Sussex but have lived in Oz for 3 years returned just before Covid. We have 3 kids aged 12, 10 & 6. Any advice on nice areas and schools the older kids may go to Truro School we have a budget of £700000. My husband is a Londoner so music & art scene v important. I love the countryside kids sail and bike. I’m keen for them to have local friends. It’s meant to be our forever home as we have moved around a bit and now need some stability. Heard Kenwyn May be nice & Perrenwell.

Perranwell is very nice and, whilst it is in the countryside, has a good community and primary school, plus it's easy to get to both Falmouth and Truro from there, as well as the Bissoe trail for cycling and Mylor for sailing.

Kenwyn is a nice area of Truro and easy to get to both coasts from there. Slightly further to travel for the sailing and cycling but not a huge amount more.

As I expect you already know, Cornwall is a very creative area and values the arts, so hopefully your husband will be happy :)

Thank you, we are going down end of July to look at some places in these areas. I don’t suppose you know anything about Truro School ie if Mums will chat at the school drop off I don’t know anyone in Truro so having a way to make some friends will be important. We are also thinking it could be a back up if we don’t get into a local primary.

I don't know about the social side of Truro School as my DDs go to Truro High School for Girls (Prep and Senior). That's very friendly though.

If you are going to sail there are some good sailing clubs around and there's also Yacht Clubs, these can be very sociable and a good way to make friends.

There's also surf life saving clubs, surf school, loads of sports clubs, etc. All of these are good places to meet new friends for children and adults.

ForeverPad · 15/07/2020 11:00

Hi Thanks Surf life saving clubs sound great and the sailing club the girl school looks very good but I have 2 boys 1 girl so having them all in one school is a bit easier.

The two schools aren't that far apart. Quite a few people have their girls in the High School and their boys in Truro School. Maybe look at both and see how you feel?

Gig racing is also popular and there's a couple of good sailing schools for lessons if any of you need a refresher.

Good luck with your move.

Fitnessmumof3 · 17/02/2021 03:25

Foreverpad, did you make the move to Truro? We are doing the same and I thought I’d see how the move went?

Pia77 · 05/03/2021 14:16

Hi ForeverPad. I’m coming to this page late but with a 9 year old boy and 7 year old girl we’re also looking to move. In fact my son has just got into Truro Prep. We will only commit to this if they find a space for our girl too as he won’t go to a school if she doesn’t also go. It’s a big deal for us and we're nervous. We’ll be moving from Herts where both kids have lived their whole lives and my son has leukaemia (end of treatment hopefully Aug 2023) We’re really keen to meet others who go to the school and ideally get a few friends before they start. Living in Mylor - members of Restronguet Sailing Club. Do let me know if you went for the plunge and how it was for you? Many thanks xx

@Pia77
Hi and I hope that things are going well for you all. We are keen to make the same move that you have, looking to live around Truro and with 3 DD's we might look at Truro School or High School.
Have you got any tips for us? Thanks so much. I am very scared as our DC have grown up in the same house in same village with very established friendship groups and yet I feel Cornwall could offer us such a lovely life.

Betsy2Heaven · 07/06/2021 11:13

@Hoopa
My DDs go to the High School so if you have any questions about it, I'll try to help Smile

Do you already have a house lined up? The property market is absolutely crazy here at the moment so if you don't already have somewhere, it may not be quite as easy as you'd hoped.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your Cornish life when you do move down!

Hoopa · 07/06/2021 13:56

@Betsy2Heaven thanks for your message. We don’t have a house lined up, market is bonkers here too, everything going to sealed bids and for much more than it is worth.
I have 3 dd’s but don’t want to consider the all girls option as they all really value their male friends. They are bright but not massively motivated, very sociable, love sports but won’t be playing for England. Do you think Truro school would be a good fit? We have what people find very interesting careers but not mega high earners and are sociable when not too exhausted from parenting! Would we fit in?

Betsy2Heaven · 07/06/2021 14:37

@Hoopa good luck with finding a house! I shall keep my fingers crossed for you Smile

My DDs like spending time with their male friends too but it is just one of those things that girls do better in all girls schools and that was important for us. They're really thriving there and see their male friends outside school, which works well for us. I'd suggest having a look around both and see what you think though from what you describe, I'd be thinking the High School but you may find you prefer Truro.

There's lots to do in the area and people are pretty sociable, so I would have thought you'd fit in just fine. Good luck with your move!

Hoopa · 07/06/2021 14:42

Thanks for that! All good to read. I know statistically girls do better in terms of results in single sex, but having been single sex myself there are other areas I am thinking about rather than just results and my dH was at a top all boys and feels very similarly. Horse for courses!

Pia77 · 25/06/2021 18:10

Hoopa and al””l - sorry I got weighed down by the move! Which is now complete! Alas my son is going to Truro School (in September) to join year 5 and my daughter chose Truro High over the prep (mostly I thing to avoid her brother) We’re down here now and very happy so far (it’s been 5 days…) I saw both schools (Truro prep twice but not the senior school) both were honestly excellent. I feel very comfortable putting the kids into these schools. Wen’d love to meet anyone down here so please PM me if you want to get the kids together and have a coffee xxx
