How noisy are the gulls in Edinburgh City Centre?

I'm considering a move to Edinburgh City Centre but don't want to end up in a flat with the unbearable sound of gulls as a constant nuisance.

I'm looking for replies from anybody who actually LIVES in the CITY CENTRE (not from people who don't have that actual insight - I'm talking about people who actually live their day-to-day and sleep in the Old Town or centre) to let me know what sort of noise pollution there is from gulls as I know from experience how unbearable it can be when they are at close quarters.

Many thanks in advance!
B

(PS I'm aware that there are gulls in the city and I don't need smartass replies from folk telling me that the gulls have every right to be there and I should move somewhere without gulls. This post is not anti gulls, I cannot stand them personally but I appreciate they are only forced into cities because of human failings. This is just me doing my due dilligence so that I don't move there and then start complaining about them. I also intend to stay overnight in Edinburgh myself in high breeding/nesting season before making a decision.

Also please do not bother telling me if you 'love the sound of seagulls!'. Anybody saying this has never lived metres from dozens of them screeching for 22 hours a day. I'm not talking about the distant beachy cries on the horizon at Cockleshell Bay here.

Sounds like you have had a bad gull experience! I live in the west end, and work very central. I have lived in various parts of the city over the years and would suggest you avoid leith, granton and new haven. Royal mile and old town isn’t bad but has other noise issues. Bruntsfield does have some gulls around the links but I had double glazing in that flat and wasn’t too bothered. I’d say your worst bet would be leith.

Enjoy your flat hunt and visit to check it out

I used to live in Alva Street EH2 where we had a bad gull problem. Honestly I had nightmares about them and they would start up at 3:00 am in the summer. They used to find one car in the street to shit all over as well. I also lived in Cornwall street EH1 and they never bugged me. I think it has to do with how the rubbish was picked up. In Alva street you just put your rubbish out in bin bags and the gulls went wild. In Cornwall street they had massive street bins. Good luck! Edinburgh is a fantastic city to live in.

Used to live in Broughton Street and honestly never noticed them once.

Mind you, I grew up in Aberdeen which is Gull City.

Appreciate the replies guys - looks like a mixed bag depending on the street! Bins in the locality do make a huge difference. I have a row of 20 of them near my current flat which makes an already noisy problem much worse. This week with the food shops closing has made a dramatic difference as the gulls have no bins full of food to snack on. I guess I will have to try and stay in the city centre to gauge how bad it is if I find the right place. It certainly is a beautiful city and one I've always yearned to live in. I even like the cold and the smell! Thanks.

Not as noisy as all the AirB&Bers you'll be living cheek by jowl with Hmm.
