Possible Bristol Relocation

Hi Knowledgeable Mum’s

We have a possible relocation on the horizon to Bristol from the Wirral. We have a teenage daughter, 2 dogs and 2 cats. We wouldn’t be making the move until June and our daughter had finished GCSE’s.

We do a lot of relocating to be honest and I’m keeping my fingers crossed this is the last one until a wee retirement cottage up a mountain....lol... so I really hope we get it right.

I like rural, with 2 dogs to walk twice a day it is a must, we like villages preferably with a pub. We will need to be near a good 6th Form as well. Not asking much are we...lol....

Hubby will be working in Bristol centre but happy to commute as he would have the option to be home based a few days a week.

I have been looking all round Bristols surroundings but would love to get your opinions and suggestions. We will draft a list and head down to have a look around and get a feel for the areas once he gets confirmation.

Thanks Everyone

Clevedon, Portishead, Backwell. All great schools and 6th forms, but in North Somerset (20 mins drive from Bristol)
If I was going to go with Bristol then I’d choose Redland, Clifton, Durdham downs areas. Much more expensive tho.

What's your budget? And what do you need with regards to your house purchase? (There's enormous house price differences across the city and surrounding areas).

Nailsea, Yate and Keynsham are all satellite towns around Bristol. All have rail and bus links to the city centre.

Almondsbury might be suitable. It’s been a long time since I lived in Bristol (I was 12 when we left) but the school there was considered good, or at least preferable to Monks Park for those of us unlucky enough to be in its catchment prior to the new north Bristol school being built. It’s more rural too.
Blackwell is good too. As with most cities the good areas like Clifton, The Downs are expensive.

Thank you everyone

Budget would be about 500-700k but we will rent first to get a feel for an area before committing. 3/4 bedroom house but definitely detached, we have never been semi detached and I imagine we would be as noisy as hell to live next door to, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone 😂😂 I am liking the idea of village small town, privacy but with a community feel. Husband is thinking coastal as he wants to keep up his Coastguard volunteering which he can commute to. I do like the beach but I don’t mind driving to it so it doesn’t have to be coastal. I like village life, commenting for hubby is fine and even a bit of a drive to 6th form is ok.

commuting even not commenting....lol....
I am happy as long as I have wide open spaces/Forrest/beaches to walk the dogs.

Portishead sounds ideal but maybe a bit big for you these days. you won’t get any nice beaches until you’re in the Minehead area. Lovely sand in Weston/Sand Bay/Brean etc but the water isn’t pretty. Wedmore or Cheddar might be more up your street but would be over an hour commute into the centre of Bristol.

Portishead has a very active coastguard/lifeboat. I don’t live there but have a few friends who volunteer.
Go and take a walk around. Has lovely marina, nature reserve, costal, excellent schools.

windyfence · 17/02/2020 10:06

Portishead not very village though. I think it’s the fastest growing town in the uk.
Used to be very villagey.
I know friend takes her children to lots of community events though, carnival, raft race, soapbox race etc. We’ve been along a few times with her. Still has a good community feel.

I'd be looking to the North of Bristol in your position, somewhere like Chipping Sodbury, Rangeworthy, Frampton Cotterell will have the feeling you seem to be looking for For your budget you could buy a decent 4/5 bed detached and they are nicer areas than Portishead or Almondsbury in my opinion.

Thank you everyone 😘

He has a follow up this week and next week then we will know for definite if the relocation is going ahead. We will plan a trip down and have a good look round all the areas.

I have been googling all the locations you have given and they all look fab, I’m hoping when we get down somewhere just screams ‘home’....lol..
