Relocating to Durham

Fourandthedog · 26/05/2019 07:46

DH has a new job in Durham and we are relocating this summer. We have a DC who will be in Y6 (and one in Y3) and some family friends have DC at Johnston Secondary School so we would like to live in this catchment for applying next year. Can anyone comment on the places around the city close to this school? We would like to live as close as possible but there isn’t much available in our price range (around £300k). There are some in Langley Moor and Meadowfield but we don’t know anything about these areas.

What about this www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-59482497.html

Fourandthedog · 26/05/2019 07:59

That house looks good but it is closer to another secondary school and we would rather Johnston was the closest one because of how the admissions work.

It does say it's in the admissions area for DJ though. Good luck, we used to live near Meadowfield but it was a while ago, we didn't like the school bus to DJ.

Look at the new Persimmon jones at Aykley Heads

Bear in mind that while DJ has a fabulous reputation for its results it does not have a good local one for pastoral care of children with SEN.

That and the links to stonewall put me off sending DS there.

However I've had a look for the stonewall links today on the school website and they seem to have disappeared.

Disfordarkchocolate · 26/05/2019 08:24

I agree it's not the only good school in Durham.

Fourandthedog · 26/05/2019 08:25

Thanks Hoggy. Also not keen on Stonewall............
Not keen on a new build house at the moment but might take a look. Thank you.
How was Meadowfield?

OP posts:
Disfordarkchocolate · 26/05/2019 08:38

Near Meadowfield was OK, we wouldn't I've back though as we have moved to a town love being able to walk to school, shops, park etc.

Hoggytat · 26/05/2019 08:49

Gosh couldn't see any stonewall reference in DJs updated safeguarding policy. Very impresssed at that.

Meadowfield and Browney are in DJ catchment. People I know who live there seem to like it.

Fourandthedog · 29/05/2019 19:03

I’ve had a look around on rightmove. Thoughts on these?
Meadowfield
Langley moor
Newton hall

Newton Hall if I was in your situation
It’s a nice area and very convenient for everything

PaquitaVariation · 10/06/2019 17:45

I would look at Langley Moor, although the house linked to earlier in the thread would be close enough to get a place at DJ too.

Fourandthedog · 10/06/2019 18:03

We are still looking. Newton Hall seems to be outside of the Johnston school catchment from what we gather which is a real shame!

Have you looked at Neville's Cross? There are three excellent primary schools close by, from which almost all children go on to Durham Johnston. From Newton Hall they often go to Fram school. From NC you can walk into town etc v easily. Like Newton Hall it has lots of families around and so loads of children for yours to play with.

Comps83 · 10/06/2019 18:05

Wow I’m really surprised at that

Comps83 · 10/06/2019 18:06

Ah yes I always forget there’s a school in Fram

PaquitaVariation · 10/06/2019 18:23

There are lots of children who live in newton hall but go to DJ, it’s still close enough to get in usually, depending on which end of NH you live. Anywhere down the hill from Neville’s Cross would also usually go to DJ.

Fourandthedog · 10/06/2019 18:45

We would love Neville’a Cross but there isn’t anything suitable available just now. Hence why we are looking at Langley Moor as well.

linoleum · 14/06/2019 06:56

Langley Moor/Meadowfield are nice, with local shops etc but also really close to the city centre, and in catchment for DJ. I’d avoid Newton Hall as it’s closer to Fram (which is still a good school but if you’re set on DJ...). Primary schools in Langley Moor and Meadowfield are good. What’s your price range? There’s a new housing estate on the edge of Meadowfield that looks nice.

Fourandthedog · 14/06/2019 07:47

We are not keen on a new build but our budget is up to £400000 based on our current house but we would prefer to keep this a little lower moving to the north so more like £300000.

Thanks for the information. I will keep looking.

Hello @PaquitaVariation

I assume the kids from Newton Hall use public buses, it doesn't look like there would be a school bus from Newton Hall, right? Thanks :)

Paquitavariation · 22/11/2023 14:40

They would just use a service bus, or walk, it’s not far. It’s expected this year that DJ’s ‘catchment’ will be much smaller though, because of the issues at St Leonard’s. They’re expecting applications to be much higher at all the other schools.
