Hope people don't mind me asking - thought I'd consult the oracle!
Considering a move with work to Bristol. Currently in York (which we love) and get the impression there are similarities...?

My main interest is whether there is parity with standard of living. Currently in a part of York with pretty good schools, great sense of community, walkable to city. 4 bed house was £375k. It's not the 'nicest' or poshest or coolest bit (nice pub, no cafes, a corner shop only).

What does that kind of money get in Bristol? Where should I be looking at with a young (KS1) family?

Thank you x

In Bristol £375k would buy you a house in some parts of the city and in others it would barely buy you a flat.
Bristol traffic is a nightmare. So consider where your work is based and how far you are prepared to commute. I live between Bristol and Bath. If I take the train I can be in work in 25 minutes. My commute by car (I have an on site parking space) a s on average 35 minutes but has been as bad as an hour and a half!

It won’t get you much in a nice/trendy part of Bristol.

Friends of our just bought a doer upper in Southville- 3 bed terrace- £500k
It’s a small city and very cool and family friendly. But it’s is horrific to drive in/out of and lots and little narrow streets. I moved out cos of the cross city traffic!!

There's also a lot happening in Bristol at the moment with regard to housing. There are massive new developments at Lyde Green to the east side of the city and at Charlton Hayes on the site of the former runway. There's also a trend towards apartments in the city centre.
There's also mutterings about where the next phase of the ring road should be. It currently runs from Filton in the north to Keynsham to the south east, but the next stage would be from Keynsham to Whitchurch.

I would expect Bristol housing to be more expensive than York to be honest. 4 bed properties tend to be quite rare but there would be 3 bed terraces in some areas possible.
I know people who have moved to Bristol from "up North" who have had to go for a smaller house in order to afford a property that met their needs. You wouldn't be able to afford the most trendy areas and those with the "best" secondary schools but I don't get the impression that you live in the most trendy part of your current city. There are 3 bed terraces in my area that would meet your budget.
KS1 there are good schools in most areas of Bristol but there are some that have waiting lists for in-year places.
Secondary school is a bit more patchy but there are plans for more new schools/ places to meet increased demand.
The other confusing thing is that not all areas with a Bristol postcode are in Bristol LEA. The other LEAs are BANES (Bath and North East Somerset between Bristol and Bath), South Gloucestershire and North Somerset (area between Bristol and Weston super mare).
