Village near the City (Barnes?)

Hello, we're relocating from Washington, DC. If you're at all familiar with the city, we were specifically in Old Town Alexandria. This beautiful, historic village along the Potomac—with generous family houses—has a sense of identity, yet is 19 minutes on the Metro to Downtown DC. We're looking for something similar in London.

Barnes seems to check most of those boxes, but my wife's work takes her to Westminster, Shoreditch, and the City. By car or public transit, that commute would be long & roundabout. Could you recommend somewhere similarly family / community oriented, but dramatically more convenient to the aforementioned locales? Many thanks!

Hi. We are in dulwich village and it ticks a lot of the boxes- very family friendly, some beautiful houses, lots of green spaces and a beautiful river. When family friends come to visit they often comment how it feels like we aren’t in London at all, but it’s perfect as it’s about a 15 minute commute on the tube into town.

Hampstead is also lovely if your budget permits (it’s very expensive), and is about 25 mins on the tube into Westminster. Primrose hill is also lovely and worth having a look into, but again a commute from there would be slightly longer at about half an hour.

I'd also look at Ravenscourt park and Brackenbury areas, near Hammersmith for transport and the river for beauty and atmosphere but with good community feeling.

And Wimbledon of course.

Interested to hear that there is a tube station in Dulwich Village Confused.

Barnes is quite handy for Westminster, just go from Hammersmith. Obviously living in north Barnes nearer the tube would make this easier.

The OP didn’t specifically ask for the tube and North Dulwich station is 15 mins to London Bridge. Also a short bus ride to Peckham or Denmark Hill where you get can get the London overground straight to Shoreditch.

You might also want to look at Blackheath and Greenwich.

A poster on this thread described Dulwich Village as a short 15 minute journey away from the city on the tube. Perhaps read all the posts? It's hardly a long thread.

There is the river bus from Putney. However anywhere near the river has terrible congestion because of having to cross the bridges.
I would definitely look East rather than west London. It is easily an hour into the city. A train line line into a mainline central London station would be faster
