Hello, we are relocating to Bristol with a baby and while reading previous threads on here has been helpful, I'd appreciate info/advice on some particular points.
Background:
My new job, starting in September (when the baby turns one), will involve three years of splitting the week between Southmead Hospital and the University of Bath, and possibly also St Werburgh and Fishpond. I'm hoping to use public transport as much as possible. The husband will retrain at Bristol uni for one year then hope to become a software developer. We'll both work/study full time and baby will go to a childminder/nursery. We are not overly keen on suburbia/anywhere that requires driving everywhere (although we do have a car). Would like to be within walking distance of a train station, a park/playground, cafes and ideally a good school (if not too much to ask!).
- Public transport
After some initial house viewing, Whitehall/St George/Redfield/the eastern bit of Easton seems to tick many boxes for us (pleasant looking Victorian terraces, diverse area, good schools, nice park, cafes and shops within walking distance). According to Google map, travelling from Whitehall to Southmead Hospital by bus takes less than 30 minutes. I wondered if this applies at rush hour too?
- East vs North Bristol
We looked at Horfield too but can only afford the Northville/Filton end of it (ie away from Gloucester Road sadly), one particular property we're considering is a "new" built (10 years old) off north of Toronto road. After just one day of viewing we have the impression that this part of Horfield seems less vibrant/has less of a community feel to it than St George. A quick look at the local school (Upper Horfield) doesn't look too promising either. However location wise this is great as within walking distance of Southmead hospital and the Filton train station with direct trains to Bath... Any views on Horfield/Northville/Filton vs. St George/Whitehall/Redfield/eastern bit of Easton in terms of transport, amenities and schools would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks.
