Schools good for special needs

Can anyone recommend a school that is helpful/positive/inclusive towards children with special needs, particularly autism?

I'm about to start applying for a reception place for my autistic daughter and it's a bit of a minefield.

Ideally Welwyn Garden City/ Codicote/ Stevenage areas but I'm willing to travel for the right school!

Friends have a daughter at The Collett School in Hemel and love it. Their daughter seems very happy there and the head sounds amazing. The facilities sound wonderful too.

I agree the head of The Collet is really fantastic.

Does your daughter have an EHCP?

In that case Southfields may be an option too, it's a primary SN school and I've heard really positive things about it.

Mainstream wise take a look at those closest to you. In some mainstream schools some find them fabulous for SEN but another family may not find the school so good.

We are in the same boat as you with our son. His Senco at school is strongly advising we move him to a mainstream school with a unit as he seems to be struggling there. We are looking to move boroughs into Herts but spoke to the SEN team there who were not that helpful today! They couldn't give me a list of schools with an ARP (additional resource provision) but advised I travel through the list of schools on the website.

We’ve got a bit further - I saw Lakeside, which IMO was too severe for my daughter. I’m seeing Southfields at the beginning of December, and have found a mainstream primary that I’d be very happy to send her too as well.
What needs does your son have? I’ve heard about a great primary school near borehamwood with a unit specifically for speech/communication I can’t remember the name though. Maybe try the Facebook SPACE page as people on there are quite helpful.
