Bristol Grammar?
Sorry, I can't really help. We moved a long way from Bristol, partly because the school situation is dire.

I wouldn't say that the school situation is dire in Bristol, as things have improved over the years.

I'm also pretty sure that Bristol grammar is a fee paying school. OP - are you wanting to look into fee paying schools?

With regards to state schools in Bristol it depends on where you're planning to live i.e. North Bristol or south Bristol.

Colston girls school has been rated outstanding and is highly recommended. My cousin attends this school and loves it. Bristol cathedral choir school also has a really good reputation but it's random allocation (doesn't have a catchment area), as does St Mary redcliffe secondary school.

If you're considering schools on the outskirts of Bristol than chew Valley and Wellsway school have good reputations too.

The issue you are going to face is the fact that the majority of schools in Bristol are over-subscribed (especially the ones noted above)

Am pretty sure that a similar post was uploaded on here a few weeks back so you might want to see what responses were uploaded for that post.

Good luck

OP - I think the other post was titled 'bristol and surrounds - secondary schools'.

Where is your desired neighbourhood in Bristol (if you don't mind me asking)?

mshagerdi · 30/07/2017 12:23

I don't know Bristol at all, so I don't have any idea. that is why I become a member here :to ask about living in Bristol. thanks.

Depends on your budget for rent and where you're going to be working. Lots of Bristol schools are improving rapidly but you might want to pick with care. The (officially) outstanding ones are usually oversubscribed, so getting a place might be hard.

Redland green is highly regarded you need to check with council Re furthest distance offered. As pp said cathedral, St Mary Redcliffe and Colstons girls are all good schools you need to read the admission criteria carefully as all 3 are different.

The ten year old would be in primary school.
Start by visiting the education pages of the council website for admission criteria and read ofsted reports then arrange to visit.

Bristol grammar is fee paying

The secondary schools are not dire but there are challenges south of the river which have meant that we are going down the independent route. That said, Bath schools are an option, Hayesfield (all girls) is excellent and would be our first choice for state school. There is Oldfield (mixed) which is a good school too.
BGS is fee paying and not a traditional grammar school. Colston girls and Cathedral are both lottery allocation and amongst the most over subscribed in the city.

Does Colstons girls still have a language aptitude category for entry and cathedral a musical aptitude?

Rudi44 · 31/07/2017 09:08

yes for both Colstons and Cathedral language and music aptitude. Its relatively few places, around 14 I think.
