Hi All
I've had so much help from this group about choosing areas to relocate to - after homing it down a bit - I think I am stuck between right out in the countryside or living right in town. If we live in town we want to be in catchment area for Durham Johnston. Does anyone have any advice as to how far out people seem to be getting in within...ie do you have to actually be in the catchment area? How did it work this year? Any help much appreciated again. So sure this is the right area...everyone so helpful.x

I dont think this brochure covers outcome from this year's admissions but it will give info from last year on Durham Johnston... hope this helps!

How it works out this year is no guarantee of next year.

We've been looking at houses on the edge of the area and the last place that small houses have sold for high prices to the North seems to be around the Sniperly and whitesmocks area. Dryburn and fram see much more normal (thank goodness!) There's always a flurry of house sales in the spring and summer of people positioning themselves with previous year's final leavers selling up!

I wouldn't count on safely being able to go any further than half a mile away, TBH. You can't risk anywhere out in the countryside. Safest bet is sticking with Neville's cross and close by. Plenty of good housing in all but the lowest price brackets in the area. Some victorian, some newbuilt townhouse style.

if you google, you get a sort of admissions area, btw. Durham Johnston doesn't have a catchment area, as such because it's so heavily oversubscribed. Ignore the area because there are years where many people in the drawn area are disappointed

Hi. Do anyone knows the catchment area of Johnston comprehensive school please

PurpleTinsel · 30/09/2022 17:13

@Moral27

Have you looked on the Durham council website for the oversubscription criteria?

Basically, if Durham Johnston is your closest school - measured by shortest walking route - then you’ll get priority over a child who has a different closest school. If you’re not sure which school is your closest, then the council should be able to tell you if you contact the schools admissions department.
But looked after children, children with exceptional medical needs and siblings are still the top 3 priority categories regardless of where in County Durham they live.

This page: www.durham.gov.uk/article/27950/Secondary-school-admissions-individual-school-and-academy-intake-information has a table showing details of how many children applied to the county’s secondary schools last year, and on what basis the last place was offered (where applicable).
