I have the fringe programme open. Watch shall I go and see this year?

Totally sick of crap 50 minute - 40 quid family shows. I want the gems!

Any and all recommendations welcome. Smile

I'll join you. We're visiting for a few days, first time, and dd is performing. Any tips welcome.

I had a quick browse but a bit uninspired so far. Have you found any good ones?

Helsbels41 · 20/07/2017 20:59

We enjoyed Forth on the fringe last year - you get a sample of a few shows. We are going to the pub quiz for kids too - looks fun! My daughter is 9 this year.

I'm thinking of going to see The Wonderful World of Lapin at the Scottish Storytelling Centre because it is advertised on here and I can't be bothered looking through the whole programme again.

Did anyone see it last year? I know that it has been around for a while. We live near Paris though, so might be a bit boring for DCs if it is very Paris focused, or DS could charm the audience by screaming "TALK ENGLISS" every time someone speaks French.

Tickets for Forth on the Fringe are £24, even for the matinee. Shock

Am I seriously out of touch with ticket prices?

@LIZS what show if your daughter performing in, if you don't mind sharing? I can put it on my list to see unless tickets are £24.

Redbridge arts Macbeth with Andy canon at story telling centre. They didblack beauty at traverse at Christmas which was brilliant..
Apart from that there is a lot of dross and nonsense.. save your money, see the street theatre, head to the kid zones.. Scotland is a world leader in children's theatre.. it's a shame the fringe is so bad

Absofruitly · 25/07/2017 13:49

My eldest saw and loved a pair of Ethiopian jugglers on Blue Peter recently and as they were on there plugging their upcoming Fringe show, we have bought tickets. It is this one: tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/circus-abyssinia-ethiopian-dreams - hope it's good. Haven't been able to take either of my DC to the circus in the past because of clown fear, but this circus show looks to be clown-free, so fingers crossed they will enjoy it.
Helsbels41 what is the pub quiz for kids? My eldest would love that!

AddToBasket · 26/07/2017 23:01

The pub quiz sounds great.

I sifted through and shortlisted and half of the kids stuff we fancied was free non-ticketed anyway. So worth just looking at what's free and going from there.

Hi all,
I'm bringing my band to the Edinburgh Fringe this year with a fun swinging jazz gig for all the family! It's called "Swing from the Movies" and is on at Venue43 between 15th-25th August (except 20th) at 11.30am...i've added the event on this site in case it appeals. It's only 50 mins long and not too pricey! And there are family ticket deals. We sing a range of fun, family-friendly songs from the films and incorporate numerous colourful props etc! Songs from Films such as Mary Poppins, Jungle Book, Aristocrats, Monsters Inc, Star Wars, La La Land etc! We love having young children in the audience and find they are usually very engaged! ...we hope there will be room for them to move about and dance a bit during the gig! Do come and say hi if you make it!

Well if the brilliant and much missed 'The Man Who Planted Trees' is anything to go by, their new production, Leaf by Niggle is bound to be a success. Puppet State Theatre are magical, their performances stick with you for a lifetime. I first took my eldest (now almost 22) 10 years ago to 'Trees' and then both Boyd almost every year since. Now, these are rugby playing, jock types, not theatre going art types, and they were entranced. They even brought friends along in various years.

PST can do no wrong for me. On at the Scottish Stortelling Centre.

I'd second Andy Canon on the basis of seeing his previous shows.

Dd is having a great, if exhausting, time. Without wIshing to be too blatant, or identifying Blush, her group is performing each afternoon this week at Space venue 38. Also apparently to be found leafleting and on stage along the Royal Mile. Looking forward to catching up with her and hopefully seeing a few other shows.

TheApprentice · 10/08/2017 17:47

If you like musicals I would recommend anything by Captivate theatre. We've just been to see Annie and saw Oliver last year and they were excellent, vibrant productions.

LIZS · 13/08/2017 11:27

Got home late last night after a hectic few days. Reduced Shakespeare Company, Showstoppers and All Quiet on the Western Front worth seeing. Although I'm not into stand up really Fred McCauley was entertaining but Ben Fogg distinctly mediocre. Durham Revue was slick and had inventive material well delivered.

Dd is on her way home separately. Saw their show twice and they sustained it to the end despite exhaustion, with a final sell out performance. Great experience for them all and hats off to those with the vision and energy to make these shows happen. Think she'll be asleep for a few days!

Blankiefan · 13/08/2017 13:27

Best things so far:

For kids - Gruffalos Child was super; really good production with great story telling

For adults - Sofie Hagen's Dead Baby Frog. Surprisingly upbeat comedy show (from one of the founders of The Guilty Feminist podcast) about her emotionally abusive grandfather.

GrouchyKiwi · 14/08/2017 12:31

DH took our older two to a performance of Disney songs, which was great. Somewhere on George Street, in a church. That's all I can remember about it, sorry. Blush

I went to Austentatious on Saturday. It was excellent. I think they're performing all month so if you can get tickets for it you should go. Was about £14. It's improvised Jane Austen stories.

The only other thing I'm going to is Cat-Like Tread's performance of The Sorceror by Gilbert & Sullivan. I love G&S, and one of our friends is in it (she's a fabulous singer & so funny) so I'm expecting good things.

Booboo66 · 16/08/2017 18:37

The listies make you LOL really really did make us LOL. Would recommend for some lighthearted and very silly fun! DD hasn't stopped talking about it and using the jokes
