Best area to live around Glasgow

Hello! I'm living in Kingswells near Aberdeen the past 12 years and is time to move! Me and my husband are setting a business in Glasgow city center. We have 3 boys age 12,9 and 2. We would like to live in a quiet area where the kids could play outside and make lots of friends in the area. Right now the boys play outside ride their bikes in a really safe environment and the schools are really good. I would like to keep the same standards or better good schools nursery, primary and secondary school, good GPS and hospitals and a safe area. I heard about east refrenshire but the price of the properties are too high.Any other schools with good reputation and a nice area to live. Not to far from the city center between 20 to 30 minutes drive? Thank you very much but I fell absolutely lost when is time to choose where to live when you have no clue about an area.

Quite often in the East Dunbartonshire area (in particular Milngavie/Torrance/Bearsden) the jump in price to 4 bedrooms is hefty.. you might consider buying a 3 bed with potential to extend or convert the attic?..

Hi,
I am also thinking about moving to Glasgow and there are new builds in Muirhead that look lovely. But reading these comments nobody has mentioned Muirhead but has mentioned all surround g areas. Is there a reason for this???
Thanks

Muirhead is in North Lanarkshire I think and all the other areas previously discussed like Lenzie, Bearsden, Milngavie etc are in East Dunbartonshire. So different council area/ schools.

Edna you'll get a semi in East Ren for your budget if you're savvy about it. Houses move quickly though so you can't hang around.

North Lanarkshire isn't really known for it's schools MJBrown. There's pockets of it that are nice but it can be a bit insular. Definitely go for a visit in the local area and see if it's for you.

Thanks. I am moving from a small village and I didn't realise about the different council areas. Thanks for the heads up!!

I live in Stepps and its a lovely little village. Local primary schools are decent and we are still in the catchment for lenzie academy.

Muirhead is the next village along from Stepps and is nice from what i can see

Bothwell/Uddingston are close to East Kikbride but much nicer :)

hairypaws · 28/09/2017 21:17

I'm East Kilbride born and bred if you want more info.

Another vote for Bearsden here, lovely and green with a village feel and great schools.

You might find this interesting OP, it's about East Dunbartonshire having been voted the best place to be a woman. I was at it, pleased to see Amy McDonald. It's a bit rose tinted but it's a great place to have a family. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09310jt

I grew up in Cumbernauld, and there are quite a few new build properties and estates.

Cala are looking at 300+k for a 4 bed home, Bellway are starting at 245k for a 4 bed home and Barratt are about to begin development starting at 214k for a 4 bed townhouse.

There are a few gyms, a simple shopping centre but it is mainly residential now. Great transport links to all areas of Scotland due to motorway and rail connections.

Primary schools near the newer build areas (Eastfield, Cumbernauld, Holy Cross, St. Andrews, Whitelees and Baird Memorial) are all good as is Greenfaulds and Our Ladies High School. However a few children also get the train from Croy to Lenzie (10 minutes plus a 5 min walk) and attend Lenzie Academy without the need for extortionate house prices.

I wouldn't say Muirhead is the best area...... it's not terrible but Stepps is nicer (tho can be pricey depending on your budget).
I live in Millerston which is the not quite as posh bit tacked on to the other end of Stepps from Muirhead.

Plus the High school in Muirhead (Chryston) isn't the best league tables wise. My DSDs both go there and are doing fine but as I said the league tables aren't great.

Bishopbriggs Academy has the best results in East Dunbartonshire. I love it here.
