Moving to Mill Road area from London - GP/ hospital/ yoga recommendations!

Hi all,

I am expecting my first baby in November and my husband and I are moving to the Mill Road area from London at the end of July. Can anyone recommend a good GP surgery in the area? I have seen mixed reviews online so would be great to get advice. Also has anyone given birth at the Rosie at Addenbrookes and if so was your experience positive?

Also on a separate note can anyone recommend any good prenatal yoga/pilates classes?

Thanks!

Hi, I live just off mill road and am also expecting in November! (Although this is our 3rd)

GP surgeries...you go to which is closest, no choice in the matter... I'm changing to Brookfield's health centre as I've recently moved from a different area of Cambridge.

The Rosie hospital is great, if you can get in! I had my first at hinchinbrook in Huntingdon as they were full, despite me living literally around the corner!!
It was actually a better experience than having my second at the Rosie, more 1:1 care, I was the only one on the maternity ward!!
The Rosie was heaving when I had 2nd baby and the post natal ward was awful. I'm actually considering a home birth just so I don't have to stay on the post natal ward again! The staff are just too busy, not their fault.
The birth centre is amazing. Beautiful. You'll get to have a look round at your 32 week midwife appt which is held at the unit.

Cambridge is great for kids, it's lovely having your first. Make sure you go to the big scream at the arts picture house! Can't do that with a toddler in tow! Loads of baby groups along Mill road too.

Oh and yoga/Pilates

I did the pregnancy yoga at Camyoga with my first which was quite nice. I do did quite a lot of yoga so I just continued with my regular class for my second and adjusted/left out certain poses.
Not sure about Pilates, I want to give that a go though so if you hear about something let me know!

My friend lives in Chesterton and there was a class there for Pilates but Chesterton is too far and over too many bridges...too much effort on a bike!!

Regarding yoga and pilates

One of the teachers lives very locally and it's been recommended by other parents at my son's school.

It's a great area for kids. Lots of local groups, nice parks inc a paddling area in the summer at Coleridge Park. Great for cafes and lots going on at Ross and Romsey Mill community centres and at St Philip's Church.

Mill Road is a great area!

There are lots of great pregnancy yoga classes in Cambridge - here is a list:

I went to Lisa's classes at St Andrew's Hall in Chesterton and they were lovely. I also rate Bryony Vickers and Karin Elkund. Haven't tried the others.

I don't know about GPs I'm afraid. But I gave birth at the Rosie and know lots of people who did. Mixed experiences, some great, some less so! Mine was ok. The birth centre (midwife-led unit) is amazing but I didn't get to use it unfortunately - any sign of any complication and they whisk you up to the ward! It is good to have both in the same place so transferring is easy.

Petersfield Practice at 25 Mill Road is good, saw me through 2. All the GPS are good, Drs Kelly and Kumar particularly.

I'm not aware of anything that says you need to go to the nearest GP surgery - as far as I know, you can choose, as long as it's within their broad catchment (usually city and villages). I've moved a few times since registering at Bridge St as a student.

Thanks for the responses. I have been feeling really overwhelmed with the move, especially as its my first baby so this makes me feel much better!

PrincipalCelestia I will let you know if I find any pilates classes

I go to Mill Rd surgery, and they've been great. As was the Rosie. Vinery Rd studios do a pregnancy Pilates class locally.
Good luck with the move and your pregnancy - I moved to Cambridge from London last year while pregnant with my now 3 month old and it's been lovely.

Mill Road is a lovely area, and fantastic for children. I can recommend York Street Medical Practice.

The Rosie is a very good hospital, and I received great care there for both my pregnancies and births. As pp have pointed out, the postnatal ward is crowded and understaffed, though the staff themselves are lovely.
