Moving back to Leeds. Looking for advice following ADS diagnosis

Morning All
We will shortly be relocating from London back to Leeds with our (soon to be) 3 year old son. Our son has recently received a diagnosis for autism and I'm keen to find out more regarding the support to be found locally both within an educational and social sense.
We are hoping to be based in the Horsforth area.
Does anyone have any experience of the local SEND provision in pre school/schools? Any particular recommendations? Any local support groups / resources etc that have proved useful?
Any guidance and/or advice would be gratefully received.
Best Wishes

Hi MissP, I'm afraid I don't have any direct experience to be able to offer advice, but no one else has replied!!

The schools are generally very good. West End seems to have a good reputation for SEN provision. There is also Horsforth Childrens Services, which is a sort of cluster thing bringing together the schools and other services to help. They would certainly be able to point you in the right direction for support even if they don't provide it themselves.

Thanks very much for your response - much appreciated.

Anything further guys of Leeds would be appreciated. Apols for typo above - should read 'ASD diagnosis'.

Best Wishes

The Stars team in Leeds would be a good place to start re: info and support regarding your son's ASD diagnosis: www.starsteam.org.uk/

Will you be wanting a mainstream primary or special school? If you google Leeds Local Offer- SEND you should find lots of info and you can search for schools. Special school provision is arranged into SILCs by city area (I and there are special schools and also mainstream schools with links to the SILCs. All the Horsforth primaries are good schools- I'd speak to each specifically about your son's needs. There's also Ireland Wood and Rawdon St Peters nearby which have links to the North West SILC.

I second Ireland Wood which is in Cookridge, for SEND provision

MissPiggy101 · 21/06/2017 22:07

MUCH appreciated both.
Don't suppose anyone knows of a local support group where parents / children can meet one another ? Thanks

P.S. We've been advised to try a mainstream nursery initially and see how that goes (will be applying for schools by Jan 18)

Any recommendations with respect to local pre school / nurseries with SEND support?

Hello,

I'm not too sure what there is around Horsforth, but I do know of a support group based in Garforth thejigsawtree.org/

It could be a bit of a trek around the ring road from Horsforth but I'm sure if you got in touch they'll also know of other groups and resources around Leeds.

MissPiggy101 · 22/06/2017 22:01

Thanks very much for that. It's much appreciated.

Anyone with a view of SEN support for early years in the Horsforth area? Recommend nurseries etc?

Thanks!

I don't know specifically in relation to autism but I know people with other SEN have gone to Prospect House and seemed to be happy with it.

MissPiggy101 · 23/06/2017 16:55

Thank so very much

LS29 group supports parents of children with SEN, though further aware. Bradford Autism Support may be able to point you in the right direction. www.autismbradford.org.uk/

Hi,
Although not the age range you are looking for, there's a new school in North leeds (Cookridge) for ASC kids 11+
www.lighthouseschool.co.uk/about/

Hope this link works. Maybe they will be able to tell you from which schools they have their intake, and learn about good experiences?

MissPiggy101 · 24/06/2017 07:48

Thanks both. Much appreciated.

My son is about to leave Brownberrie Lane Preschool in Horsforth to go to school (mainstream). He is (as yet undiagnosed) autistic and they have been absolutely brilliant with him, bent over backwards to support his needs and development. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to chat more about that and about general provision for additional needs here in Leeds. Your DS should be eligible for some top-up funding, depending on his needs.

MissPiggy101 · 13/07/2017 14:48

Thanks very much MoManda. Looking at nurseries at the moment so this very helpful.
