Consultation: Cambridgeshire NHS cutting funding for all specialist fertility services - please take the survey

In direct contradiction of NICE guidelines, Cambridgeshire PCT is considering stopping 'routinely commissioning any specialist fertility services other than for two specified exceptions'.

The wording is very vague - it talks about IVF but also about 'specialist fertility services' (clomid? ovulation induction?) which are relatively affordable and which help many couples to conceive a much wanted child.

Their wording is very vague but their exceptions are for people who have become infertile due to conditions such as cancer. I have a huge amount of sympathy for people in that situation, but using exceptions in this way implies that people who have infertility that is unexplained or not from something like cancer are somehow 'at fault' for their infertility. This is clearly rubbish - I don't know many people more motivated to do everything they can to help 'fix' their condition than infertile people .

I am one of the lucky ones - I got my free NHS go and am pregnant. Thanks to the knowledge and experience we gained through that round of treatment, we would be much more confident about paying privately for future fertility treatment. I think everyone deserves one shot.

I'm not expecting everyone to agree with me, but please have your say. You may be done with kids, but it could be your sister, your daughter, your best friend.

Survey completed. This will contribute to much sadness for couples who cannot conceive naturally for whichever reason. I benefitted from free IVF on the nhs 6 years ago and have a happy, healthy 5 year old and will be forever grateful that this science even exists. Good luck in your pregnancy!

It is not just a shocking proposal in itself, but also the fact that it's such a dramatic change - from wide, ideal provision to basically providing nothing at all.
