Hi, I have a child in Year 3 and have been told that I need to book in a tutor for Year 5 now!

I really don't know where to start and people tend to be quite cagey. The only one I've heard about is waiting list already.

I'd prefer one close by but am willing to travel a bit further for one that is highly recommended so would be grateful for any thoughts, thanks.

It is easy to get caught up in the hype. We home tutored (whilst working) DD for three lots of local tests (NW, Bexley, Kent). I appreciate it isn't for all. We did try a tutor for a few weeks but they were ineffective. I appreciate home tutoring isn't for all though. A tutor that is recommended may well be in demand but how well they work with your child may be a different matter.

For now just make sure your DC is reading well and using varied vocabulary. Maths basics are also good to reinforce. A visit in Y4 to the schools can help with motivation for prep for tests but it can wait until Y5 - depends how many schools you plan on visiting but as there are a number within reach of our area of can be helpful to spread them out. We also did paid for mock tests in the spring prior the tests which helped identify weak areas so the onehiur a week we did was well spent time.

So sorry I don't have a tutor to recommend but take a look at the elevenplusexams forum and see all sorts of information. Feel free to ask other questions and PM me if your prefer.

P.s we didn't start the home tutoring until start of Y5 and it was just one hour a week. DD did have friends seeing multiple tutors that gave homework and doing Explore Learning. They were spending some of them five hours a week on prep - bonkers im my mind, and not always successful.

I'm only looking at Year 5 and the lady I approached is quite relaxed and does an hour a week with one worksheet (her own daughter is starting NW I believe). Can't believe she's onto waiting lists already.

I just think, knowing my daughter, that she'd work better for someone else! I have heard about someone else local but waiting for some contact details.

She reads a lot, and quite varied stuff and we do extra maths. I would rather not tutor at all but as everyone else does...

Thanks for replying.
