How long would this commute be by car? By bus (are they regularl .Unfortunately my husband wants to drive and doesn't want a commute or more than 20 mins but I see that these villages have nice rental properties available and I hear that they are fairly lively and friendly. Does anyone do this commute?

Totally depends on what time he needs to be at work and where.

From Girton:
Bus: you would have to change in the city - no 6 into town (only 2 an hour) and then no2? out of town.
Car: it's at least 20 mins with no traffic at all, so in rush hour I would assume 30mins+?
About 30-40mins cycling probably.

My friend bikes from Girton and says it takes 35 mins, if she has to go by bus it can take up to an hour if she's unlucky.

ChasingSquirrelsinCambs · 05/05/2017 10:35

Completely depends on the time of day.
I work in Girton - at the Cambridge side just by the A14, and have done that journey over the last six months at non-rush hour times when late-DH had appointments at Addenbrookes. I'd say it averaged 25-30 minutes, without taking parking and walking times into consideration. Google maps is saying it would take 25 minutes now - 10.30am on Friday. I'd add a few more minutes for Girton proper.
Rush hour? Far longer. Cambridge rush hour traffic really is horrible. And in the winter it's worse.

Buses are every 20 minutes from Girton Corner (Huntingdon road). Bus no 5.
From Histon/Impington you could get the guided bus all the way to Addenbrookes (I think).
They are all lovely villages.

What time of day are we talking about? I live in North Cambridge in the city and sometimes go to Addenbrookes by car because I have stuff to transport. It's 15-20 mins if not traffic but can be more than an hour if the traffic's bad.
If your DH is determined to drive I think I'd be looking more South of the city, or maybe Southwest. Fulbourn is quite nice and I'm guessing not as expensive as the Shelfords...

Leafygirl · 06/05/2017 18:03

I'm not sure that there's anywhere that's guaranteed sub 20min by car in rush hour. It's taken me longer than that to do from the end of Granham's Lane to Addenbrookes roundabout quite regularly!

Tingalingle · 06/05/2017 18:53

I've certainly parked at the Park & Ride and walked to Addenbrooke's faster than the traffic queue in the morning.

If he only ever needs to travel at midday and midnight he might do it in under 20 mins.

HereIAm20 · 06/05/2017 19:13

To get to Addenbrookes in under 20 minutes you'll need to look at Queen Edith's area, Cherry Hinton, Fulbourn or Shelford.

DorothyParker111 · 07/05/2017 10:09

Even if you were living in QE, Cherry Hinton, Fulbourn or Shelford, it would often be quicker to bike to Addenbrooke's than to drive. The south of the city is going to be subject to one set of congestion-inducing roadworks after another for the next three years or more: Hills Road cycleway, Addenbrooke's roundabout, Fendon/Mowbray Road roundabout, A1307 busway (Hills Rd/Babraham Rd). The Hills Road cycleway works have already been active since January 2015. Just don't plan on being able to drive to Addenbrooke's.

Yep, if I was renting I would just rent really near Addies and cycle there.
