Moving to Merseyside/Wirral?

Wanderer89 · 28/04/2017 20:29

Evening,

I'm looking for any advice please: it looks like we're going to be moving from The South up to Merseyside in the next couple of months as DP has just been offered a job in Liverpool.

Very exciting, but neither of us really know the area... so this is where (hopefully) you fine people come in with your local knowledge!

We'll be renting and would like to be somewhere where DP can commute into the city by bike/public transport as opposed to having to drive.
We've been wondering about the Wirral, as long as it was close-ish to the ferry... DS is 2 and I don't drive, so ideally we could find somewhere with local amenities (children's centre, park, a few shops) close by.

What do you think? Any and all help gratefully received!
Thanks!

Liverpool girl born and bred here Grin
Around Sefton park, Aigburth and Mossley hill is lovely. Avoid Toxteth and dingle. Woolton and Allerton are nice too.
There are nice places on the Wirral, but need to be on the west of the m53 really. And IMO Liverpool is much friendlier than Wirral Grin Travelling to Liverpool using the tunnel isn't always easy. Gets very busy at rush hour and public transport often seems to go on strike/ have maintenance work going on. And the cost to drive through adds up significantly if you did choose to drive.
Good luck with your move!

Justtrying · 29/04/2017 06:35

I grew up on the Wirral but now live in Knowsley.
Agree with namechange regarding being west of the M53, frequent trains into Liverpool from West Kirby, with its beautiful beaches, Hoylake, near Royal Liverpool golfcourse. Meols doesn't have many ammenities if you don't drive. Heswall is lovely but it would be a bus into Liverpool as would Pensby or Irby. For the ferry you need to be near woodside or Seacombe, which aren't as nice in my opinion.
If you decide on living in Liverpool, Allerton, Mossleyhill and Wavertree have nice areas, good schools and are well connected by bus and train.

DH is from Liverpool and I lived there for about 6 years. Completely echo what those above had said. I worked in West Kirby (traveling from the city centre by public transport daily) and found the commute fine. I would live in West Kirby if we were ever to move back and it has a great Primary school (St Bridget's), lovely 'proper park' and beach and mix of supermarket and independent shops. Close to Liverpool and Chester. On the Liverpool side definitely Aigburth, Allerton for a young family I reckon. I love going back to Liverpool, the city has so much to offer and a fantastic arts scene. Where abouts are you moving from - another city or more rural?

AnaisB · 29/04/2017 07:48

I agree with what has been said above regarding areas. I've lived in Augbirth and Mosley Hill with a young family and both were fab. Have you considered Formby? Lovely national trust woodlands (with red squirrels) and beautiful sand dunes. Schools are also great.

AnaisB · 29/04/2017 07:49

(Formby is 29 mins on train to Liverpool) actually, Crosby is also worth considering IMO (about 20 mins to city centre).

Wanderer89 · 29/04/2017 13:34

Thank you all so much- that's a great start, thank you. I'm getting quite excited to explore now!

We currently live in a leafy town, so whilst it's reasonably quiet near us it's walking distance to the town and parks etc and I've got quite used to the convenience of that!

Anyone know what Wallasey is like as an area? There seems to be more within budget for us there, but I've heard some mixed reviews of the place...

I'm in Knowsley too which is on the border of Liverpool and I too suggest the south of the city, great transport links into town, lots of nice parks, good schools and some really beautiful houses.
You may be in for a pleasant surprise regarding house prices depending where you're from, you get a lot of house for your money, even renting.

I do not know Wirral at all so can't comment.
You will certainly receive a warm welcome wherever you are end up Smile

SirNiallDementia · 29/04/2017 13:39

Wallasey is not as nice as the areas mentioned on this thread imho.

dddddddddd · 29/04/2017 13:40

Personally if I were to move to Wallasey I would be choosing New Brighton or Wallasey Village, I've worked in Wallasey and they are the 2 best areas IMO. I would second south Liverpool although I live in the North of the city and love it! Good luck!

threepiecesuite · 29/04/2017 15:04

You'll get good value for money in Waterloo in the north of the city which is 20 mins on the train into Liverpool.

threepiecesuite · 29/04/2017 15:07

For example this one for £175k

jo10000 · 29/04/2017 16:58

Just moved from down south to Ainsdale, near Southport. Its on a train line to Liverpool, cheap tickets, not far, and by a beach! Worth thinking about...

kel1493 · 29/04/2017 23:07

Hi, I'm from London but moved to Liverpool for uni. I lived in halls in Childwall (more south of the city), then I lived in Toxteth. I moved back to London when I was having my baby so I was close to my family, but hated it and couldn't wait to come home. We lived in Anfield for a bit. Now we live in Wavertree.
I never planned to stay, but I loved it here, and was so much happier. I ended up meeting my now dh (who's from here) and having a baby. I'm so much happier living here. (I tell everyone this, and it's true. My first week living in halls, so my first week here, 2 cars both stopped to let me cross the same road. I had honestly never experienced that before. I was shocked). Also the people are so friendly.
The south of the city is quite nice, good transport links. Though I quite liked living in the north of the city as well.

Wanderer89 · 30/04/2017 20:22

Thanks to everyone who's posted!
We've certainly got a look to think about in the coming weeks- every time I think we're narrowing down our search somewhere else pops up!

Another quick question, anyone ventured further east? Wondering what places like Dovecot are like? The Other Half is happy to commute, and given that properties further out seem a bit cheaper I was wondering if that was because they were in areas that no-one in their right mind would venture to.

Sorry for all the questions, but you've all been such a help. We're really grateful, thank you.

Zoflorabore · 30/04/2017 22:38

Hi op, there are some nice parts of dovecot but on the whole it's not the best of areas, I'm not too far away from there but where I live is very different, have a look at west derby too, really nice and great schools, parks etc

jo10000 · 01/05/2017 08:51

It will be very hard for you to decide if you have such a wide search area. Why not discuss with OH where you'd like to be if money no object eg city, village, pretty town. One thing to be aware of is that a lot of the north west houses are red brick. For me this always feels oppressive (I grew up around them and vowed to get away so maybe more to do with me than anyone else). So if you decide what you really want (we decided seaside) then that will help focus your search. Good luck, it's a massive decision so all the best.

threepiecesuite · 01/05/2017 09:50

Can't say I've ever felt repressed by red brick! Most of the houses where I grew up in Liverpool are Edwardian semis.

Cassimin · 01/05/2017 18:52

I have lived in aigburth/Mossley hill all of my life.
Wouldn't live anywhere else. Properties start around 120k for 2up 2down upto 900k for a detached.
So it depends on what your budget is.
You are only 20 mins from everything here. Town centre, airport, rail links to anywhere in the country.
We have 2 of the best parks, Sefton and calderstones. Lovely areas full of bars, lark lane, allerton road, aigburth road.
We have otterspool prom with its lovely walk along the river with restaurants and bars.
We are only 20 minutes away from Crosby beach with its Anthony gormley statues.
Always something to do and it's a great place to grow up.
My children stayed here for uni!
