Moving to Stroud area

Hello, we are planning on moving to Stroud this summer (!) Ot seems a lpvely place. We are currently looking for somewhere to live. Can anyone advise on places to avoid?? Perhaps there are none! - There seem to be a lot of lovely places but our budget is limited meaning we get more space in certain areas/roads/ and it would be great to know your opinion. We are a couple with a daughter 1.5 and son 5.5 yrs. Many thanks!!

Stonehouse I think is a good compromise for amenities, access and price, albeit not quite so 'pretty' as other places. Canal walks and cycles are fab - we often cycle Stroud to nailsworth with the dc's.

We moved from Brighton and i love it here. Mind you, we are only 20 min cab ride from cheltenham or Gloucester so more 'Going out' opportunities. I love it and don't miss the traffic or rushedness of more densely populated places.

Seriously . That is two while posts I have written and my phone has frozen and deleted them (!!!!)
So for the third time - and breath. . . . .

I'm sure you are not kidding yourself,&there may have certainly been more opportunities in London. Where there would be 10 there, I imagine stroud would have none...or 1 if lucky. I'm sure there's always an element of 'the grass is greener' though too - and we'll never know for sure.
Although I do have to work, I'm lucky at least that I like what I do - most of the time! I will eventually have to rebuild it all though (I'm part self employed) and the thought of that is both daunting and exciting too....but I have always had a support network in London to work within. . . . I will keep a positive outlook!
A mum to teenagers! - wow. That's a full on job in itself I imagine - well done :)

I've been through Stonehouse and have to say I did not visit the canal areas etc... I will try to check them out if time this weekend. I do love the hills though ! Haha I bet that's something all the newbies say lol

Hmmm sorry it hasn't worked properly...I was trying to link to a new promotional film about the Stroud valleys. I think it's really good! Captures what I love about this area, especially the common land and Uley bury, and the woods!

caracat · 07/02/2017 23:33

Thanks LucyJordan :) glad to hear you're loving it there!
Local nickname thanks. I've tried look g up the video but only found about 3 seconds worth. . . Will have another look

If you want to go to London then I wouldn't bother with Uley/ Dursley etc. You'd have to drive to Kemble or Stroud to get the train because Cam & Dursley station is on the wrong line for that. But much better for Bristol than Stroud is.
There is a triangle of railway lines with points at Cheltenham, Swindon and Bristol. Stroud, Stonehouse and Kemble are on one side (Cheltenham-Swindon), Cam & Dursley on another (Cheltenham-Bristol), and Bath & Chippenham on the 3rd (Bristol-Swindon).
All the morning peak trains are direct to London, then it alternates with 1 hour being a London-Cheltenham service and the next hour Cheltenham-Swindon so needing a change to go onto London.

It isn't really a problem being an hourly service, so long as you can tie it in with your working hours, and the parking at Stroud station is insanely cheap (the council carpark next to it is £2.50 a day or £400 a year).

Have a look at schools too. As a whole the area isn't oversubscribed, I could tell you at least 2 schools off the top of my head with places in every year, but some schools are full and difficult to get into because we have a lot of small schools around here.

If you don't want to be in Stroud itself there are some lovely villages, but you'll struggle without a car. There aren't many if any buses on a Sunday!

Thank you barbeasty! Very useful info x

Hello :) so. We came yesterday and on the off chance, saw a place we hadn't planned to see. It is right in town and on a main road and tiny tiny garden :/ but. . .we really liked it (!) It's a good price, station minutes walk away, the inside is nice, it's about big enough....it's just on a main road. . . . We were really not looking for this but now seeing benefits of being so close for commuting and going to town not having to use car. . . . . Ahhhh! What to do!
The lovely places with beautiful gardens usually need quite a lot of work doing in blouse with our budget. . .inside, this one is done. . . Rubbish garden but we can go out to the countryside right?? It's near xanal/waitrose area. . . .

Ha ha. We bought our house on our first reccee weekend lol and haven't regretted it. Id be concerned if no parking (maybe not on a main road?) and not enough space for a trampoline for kids/run around space. Glad you liked it though!

caracat · 13/02/2017 11:05

Thanks. There I'd parking. No room for a trampoline. ..the garden really is small... but....we're back again today to try have a another look :)

Stroud areas I'd suggest are:
LightPill, Dudbridge, Ebley, Pagan Hill, Kingscourt, Butterow, Rodborough

Stroud areas I'd steer clear of are:
Cashes Green, Uplands can be a bit hit and miss

caracat · 01/03/2017 21:13

Thank's winobaglady (lol!)
Looks like we're going to be pretty near to stroud/town. I'm getting excited about it now! . . .

My only daughter has got place in Stroud high. I currently live in Swindon and not sure about Stroud and Gloucester. Please could you advise areas to avoid as we are looking for house either in Stroud or closer to Stroud. We went to view some properties in Stroud and Quedgeley. But Stroud house prices seems to be high. Not sure about Quedgeley area. I would welcome any suggestion and advice please.

Barbeasty · 22/04/2018 08:12

If you don't want to move there's quite a contingent who get the train from Swindon every day. It's about half an hour and not far to walk from the station to the school.

Otherwise I'd look at either being able to walk, or see what their school bus routes are and whether there is anywhere you like on one of those.

Abi0402 · 22/04/2018 08:39

Hi Thanks for your message. We want to move there, but dont have enough knowledge about the place. Nothing is holding us here as she is our only child. Stroud looks lovely , but not quite a lot going on there as Swindon. Here there is lots of places to go out, restaurant, Outlet etc.
We are not sure if to look for properties in Stroud or Gloucester. There are beautiful house which fits within our budget in Gloucester in Quedgeley and Hardwicke but new properties in Stroud seems expensive! Will you recommend Kings Copse new development in Quedgeley?

blinkineckmum · 07/08/2018 16:14

Did you move OP? How is it? We are moving from Nailsworth to Cashes Green soon.

ZinZin15 · 22/11/2019 13:52

Hello Caracat

I’m very late to this thread but it came up in a google search and not sure I can even pick it up over 2 years on, but wondered how you were found the move to Stroud, if you did move? We are thinking of moving from south London as our daughter will start school in September and want to be closer to family, have a slower pace of life and a bit more space and a garden. Can anyone give any insights? Stroud sounds like it’s got lots going on with markets, lido, parks and close to lovely countryside. Plus a wide range of schools. Any advice would be greatly received. Thanks
