leaving London for Folkestone

So after years of thinking about it, weve decided its now or never to leave London and its expense and find cheaper housing.
After months of research and visits we've settled on Folkestone to move to in the summer holidays. My husband will use the high speed into central London (he gets free travel so thats not a problem) and i have applied for nurse jobs at the William Harvey and Canterbury Hospital (if anyone has any nursing experience at these hospitals id love to hear what its like to work there).
Anyone else done this? Would love to hear any stories about relocating to Folkestone especially from London.
Also, if anyone could recommend any local dance clubs id appreciate that as my 11 year old currently dances and would like to continue. Were not sure what school she will go to but any views on the local secondary schools would also be appreciated smile

Thanks puddock, they were first on my list!

Hi,

I emailed the village nursery a few weeks ago - the one joined to Castle Hill primary
They said they were full until Septembers intake but offered to put me on the waiting list
Worth dropping them an email Smile

Hello, this may be a bit too late for you but may be of use (or to others thinking of doing the same).

Wow what an amazing hot sunny bank holiday weekend it's been. We've been to so many beaches, Harbour Arm too - it feels like we have been on a lovely holiday, but we are at home.

(Been here 3 months and loving it!!)

jamoncrumpets · 07/05/2018 21:54

3 months and loving it here too! Don't regret leaving London at all.

TheClitterati · 07/05/2018 22:40

No regrets here either.

Each day we feel a little more relaxed. It's brilliant.

TaurielTest · 13/05/2018 17:22

That's lovely to hear jamoncrumpets and TheClitterati :)

Hello. I'm hoping you may be able to help me, those who have commented on this post.

I'm British and am returning to live in England after 30 years (from Australia).

I have done some research and really like the look of Folkestone, and was wondering how anyone new has settled in here recently.

It's just me and my daughter (12) and I'm hoping to find a 3br place somewhere, and would really appreciate advice from locals and those who have recently moved.

Many thanks
Mumsy

TheClitterati · 03/07/2018 16:11

I'm from nz, lived in london and moved here with my 2 dc in Feb.

We have settled in very easily and I absolutely love living here. Lots to see and do, schools seem fine, relaxed vibe, lots of supermarkets and nice restaurants. High speed train to london. Close to Hythe, Canterbury, ashford, and all of Kent of course. I think it's a lovely place to move too.

Join the "we love Folkestone" fb group for lots of info on being here.

Mumsyandbubsy · 03/07/2018 22:06

Hi TheClitterati. Thank you for replying. I'm not on FB. Will I be able to view the page without joining?

I'm a Newcastle girl and intended to move to Durham, which I love. But I'm concerned about the difference in temperatures between where I am in Brisbane (far too hot) and Durham. I thought moving further south, it may be more temperate.

It's good to know you like it and have settled well. Any advice on schools for 12yo? Thank you again, I'm very grateful for your reply.

TheClitterati · 03/07/2018 23:09

@Mumsyandbubsy I have PM'ed you

TheClitterati · 03/07/2018 23:10

Its very warm here at the moment = I am on a hill and have a lovely breeze. But absolutely cooler than Brisbane :)

TheClitterati · 03/07/2018 23:12

temperature wise I mean - I don't know how cool Brisbane is, but Folkestone is pretty cool actually.

Mumsyandbubsy · 04/07/2018 10:16

Brisbane is not cool or 'cool' at all. Stinking hot in summer - which now effectively starts at the end of August (supposed to be winter) and goes all the way through to end of April (supposed to be autumn) - it's humid - lots of days over 30 degrees - simply very unpleasant. No point having a pool as it's too hot to go outside and swim in it.

The city's 'old' buildings were destroyed by a conservative government in the 70s. It's full of unattractive new buildings and lots of apartments. No character whatsoever. And no culture either.

I'm scarred for life after living where I do for 10 years.

Whoops ... probably gone on a bit too much.

Brisbane Australia ... not for the fainthearted.

Another vote for Folkestone. We’ve moved here from Middle East. The temperature (amongst other things) is far more civilised. As PP said upthread we feel like we’re on holiday, but it’s home! Love it! As do our children 😁

elephant79 · 04/04/2019 20:56

Hi all
I am thinking of moving my family from East London to Folkstone, does anyone have any contacts at Peto Close end of Folkstone, think it’s East? Also any primary schools to avoid? We are a decent family but swapping via council accommodation. Thanks 🙏

TheClitterati · 05/04/2019 21:29

I don't know the area but looking on the map it does look very central.

Have you been down to check it out and have a look?

vapourtrail · 08/08/2020 11:54

Hello, just wondered if any of the people in this thread were still around to give an update on life in Folkestone? As someone who is also thinking of moving down I would love to hear how you are getting on!
